Skeletonwitch is more of a Thrash Metal band with elements of Black Metal than an outright Black Metal band. Their most recent album changes things up a bit, but the statement still holds true. Also, Venom played a huge role in shaping Thrash.
yeah, venom is definitely not a black metal band, if you're talking about "trve/kvlt" black metal.
Venom is awesome, indeed. Just wanted to say that. So is Mercyful Fate, for the record, while we're talking about "lumped in as a black metal band even though they definitely seriously aren't" bands.

yeah i have heard people refer to mercyful fate as "thrash" before, too, and it always confounded me.

And the user I was speaking to was just beginning to explore Norwegian second-wave stuff, which is exactly where the production I was talking about is most likely to be encountered.
As Apple states, I'm not talking about bands being forced to record with sub-par production due to lack of funds or whatnot, I'm talking about bands making a stylistic/artistic choice to record with a specific type of lo-fo/"trebly" production (often labeled "bad" by the layperson). Again, this is common to the genre - just as its common for so many hip-hop records to have "bass-y" production, modern pop records to have "loud, clean" production, etc...
If you're unfamiliar with what we're talking about here my one and only suggestion would be "listen to more black metal." You seem to be mostly into post-second-wave Century Media/Nuclear Blast type stuff, which is cool but hardly representative of the genre as a whole.
Never said that low-production doesn't exist in black metal, I know it exists. I was just saying that it's not most of black metal. That there is plenty of well-produced black metal, which is why I pointed out those bands. It sounded like a blanket statement to me that left out the best black metal bands, IMO. But after this discussion, it sounds like we're all in agreement on the point of bad production vs. good production, we just listen to different eras of black metal.
Going to see Alice In Chains in about 2 weeks and Kamelot (with VIP) in September. w00t. Can't wait to lose my marbles.

Such an epic band. I discovered them a couple months ago and just can't get enough of them. Best way to describe them is a mixture between Black Metal and Symphonic Metal, but that's not even quite a perfect description. Just listen, it's epic:
