Ah, thanks Exed, I knew it was developed by someone that I should remember, but just couldn't remember who.

I think its really quality, definitely deserved a localization.

Alcahest is simply fantastic - one of the best action-RPGs of all time probably. I rank it right up there with Ys and Xak.

No Dragon Quest?
BoneSnapDeez wrote:There are some solid WRPGs on the SNES, but I'd rather play almost all of them on the PC (DOSBox).

Except for Eye of the Beholder, which rules on Sega CD.

Oh, and the Ultima ports are really bad.
Buy the Ultima games if you want to get a complete SNES RPG collection but don't play them, since those versions are butchered.

I wish I had the Sega mouse. I have Eye of the Beholder and I've been waiting to play it for quite a while now :(
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I have mentioned Dragon Quest, but yeah there are a bunch of games on the system... NONE of which were localized...

Dragon Quest I & II
Dragon Quest III
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon

Here's another awesome title no one's mentioned: Dark Half. A gothic JRPG with dark, isometric graphics - looks like Japanese Diablo (screenshot).

I actually consider Secret of Evermore to be better than Secret of Mana. Evermore, of course, is a "JRPG" developed in the West.

My favorite imports are Dragon Quest V/VI, Dragon Knight 4 (sequel to Knights of Xentar), Terranigma, Mystic Ark (sequel to 7th Saga), Treasure Hunter G, Sailor Moon RPG, Front Mission, Alcahest, Bahamut Lagoon, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes, and Lennus II (sequel to Paladin's Quest). Some of those I own, some I have played on SNES9X and plan to own someday.

Is the hit detection any better on the other versions of Ys III? That's what's preventing me from going on any further in the SNES version. Also, Adol moves a little too fast for my liking in the game as well.

Yes, I would rank the US console ports:

Turbo CD
Genesis
SNES

No idea how the obscure Japan-only versions compare.

The remake, The Oath in Felghana, is a much better game than Ys III.

Yeah, I put it in the Top 200 SNES games during the "listmania" the forums here had (post is near the bottom) -- no doubt a super fun time, even the story was decent.

All this coming from someone who has a shmup for a name -- if there's a destination for RPGs it's the SNES.

Oh, and Ack? It appears another forum member already attempted to do the same thing this thread did

I remember that thread. He wanted to try playing all Super Famicom and Super Nintendo RPGS over a summer. ALL of them. I'm more interested in sharing thoughts on what's good or not, in what order to seek them, that kind of thing. Those guys...well, they were crazy.

That reminds me...I don't think that anyone has mentioned the SNES version of Shadowrun. I own it but have only spent a little time with it. My understanding is that it is really good, but not quite as good as the Genesis version (which - apparently - is completely different).

Ogre Battle! One of my all time favorites.

I also like FEDA as an import. I bought a cib sfc copy and had someone program a chip for me to replace in the cart. It is so similar to Shining Force in gameplay and art style.

Tales of Phantasia is awesome as well. Beautiful game.
