I really didn't like that Dimmu Borgir album either... Or anything after Enthrone Darkness Triumphant...

So I'm wondering. I recently picked up Municipal Waste's The Fatal Feast(recently being sometime in the last six months). I was wondering, of all of Municipal Waste's albums, which ones do the thrash fans consider essential? The Art of Partying? Massive Aggressive? Hazardous Mutation? I've enjoyed their music for a while, but I've never really sought out their albums.

A few things I forgot to talk about in my previous post.

GSZX1337, thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you for pointing me to Havok!
No problem, man. It's the least I can do to repay you showing me Gama Bomb. 8)

Sort of, I kinda fucked it up by skipping Emperor's Return. I read a good review for To Mega Therion on MetalCrypt and went straight to that one.
Into the Pandemonium is really strange, but definitely worthwhile.
Alright, when I start listening to Black Metal again, I'll give that one a listen.
Cold Lake, while not being quite as bad as people make it seem, is a really bizarre album to listen to. A band like Celtic Frost has no business attempting hair metal.
I've thought about just skipping that one.
Haven't ever listened to Vanity/Nemesis, but Monotheist is fantastic.
This is where I fucked up again when it comes to going through the band's discography. Monotheist is probably my earliest entry into Celtic Frost (either that or Morbid Tales, can't really remember). I've mentioned it before in this thread, but Monotheist is an absolute crusher of a Doom Metal album. I can't even guess how many times I've listened to Ground.
BoneSnapDeez wrote: Well good choice with In the Nightside Eclipse. It's one of the most critically-acclaimed black metal albums of all time, and one of my favorites. The production is fantastic, it's like an all-engulfing storm.
It really is.
I don't really care for much post-Nightside Emperor though, which is when the band started focusing on technicality more than atmosphere.
So, you only liked one album by Emperor and an EP?
Emperor's pre-Nightside material is decent enough, of you can get past the shitty recording quality.
Oooh, shitty recording quality is a real pet piss of mine. I'll give it a try, though.
Satyricon was a great band too, their first three full-lengths are genre classics, as is the Enslaved split. Avoid the newer material though, it's absolute garbage.
You're not going to like this: When I was listening to my "New Shit", I also listened to Satyricon's Now Diabolical but forgot to list it. I liked Now, Diabolical more than any of the other Black Metal albums that I've listened to.

Hell yeah, I got a notification from my Bandsintown app. Megadeth is going to the Special Guest. And as luck would have it, they're comin' to Nashville. ;)

It's weird, I never think of Celtic Frost as a black metal band. I don't really typically think of them as a thrash or death metal band either.

Guess I just think of them as one of the grandfathers of extreme metal as a whole. They don't really fit too well into any particular niche.

Celtic Frost is their own thang. I used to know tons of crust punks who listened to them too.

@GSZX1337 - If shitty recording quality is one of your pet peeves you're gonna find plenty of black metal completely unlistenable.

There's plenty of record-label signed black metal bands with good recordings.

Yes... but in general "bad production" is one of the trademarks of black metal. See Darkthrone, Beherit, Ildjarn, some early Ulver, Mütiilation, etc... All classic bands. "Bad" production can sound incredibly good and carries an incredible atmosphere when done right.

Okay. How about black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and God Dethroned?

Saying that bad production is a trademark of black metal is a bit of a blanket statement. There's just as much well produced black metal as there is poorly produced black metal. The same as any other sub-genre of metal.

A certain type of production is indeed a characteristic of many (most?) of the defining second-wave BM bands. Certainly clean production is prevalent in post-second wave bands, symphonic black metal bands, etc.

My point is that someone who is trying to explore the genre of black metal is going to be put off by many classic records if high production value is important to him/her. I never said all BM records have poor production (which is subjective anyway, as I said a lot of "bad" production sounds great to my ears).

Funny how you mention Dimmu Borgir, as I do think the original No Colours pressing of For all tid and the original pressing of Stormblåst feature that classic BM production. For all Tid was eventually remastered and Stormblåst was re-recorded completely.
