With the south (at least my corner of it) getting more and more right-wing every year, it takes guts to stand up and say "I'm not like them." Like it or not, Paisley probably will lose a few fans because of this, so regardless of the song's quality (or lack thereof), I admire him for being willing to take that risk.
Yay, so now right-wingers or conservatives are racist?

I am not a country music fan, but not addressing racism in their songs doesn't mean they avoid it. Thousands of musicians from all genres don't sing about racism. It isn't on some topic checklist of things to address during their music careers. Musicians usually write songs about what theyhave a passion for.

Fair point. It is an issue not often raised in Top 40 country music, and there are reasons for that. I just wish it could have been done with a bit more consideration and thoughtfulness, but then those aren't terms I associate with him or his genre, so I suppose I might be expecting too much.

As Bill Maher often says: "I don't think that most right-wingers or conservatives are probably racist, but I think that most racists are probably conservatives or right-wingers."

Eh, I think the song attempts to sugarcoat a lot about race relations in the US. I don't really care for it. Then again, I'm not really into country music either.

Isn't country music usually focused on the more mundane, such as struggling with love, bad economic conditions, enjoying times with friends, etc.? I always figured the most thoughtful they ever got was on reminiscing about childhood.

You know it's funny, the conservatives and right-wingers consider left-wingers as secretly racist because they spend so much time and energy focusing on the differences between ethnicities as opposed to trying to take an all-inclusive look at humanity and the country.

All it shows is that we have a lot left to do, and nobody really has any idea of how to deal with the problems associated with race and our history. If anything, I think issues over ethnicity and the resulting social problems that have accompanied it is the greatest hurdle in American society.

Bill Maher would call MLK Jr. a nigger if he thought it would make him money.

In my experience, yes (and homophobic, xenophobic, sexist...). Maybe it's just the area I live in, but I've been surrounded by it my whole life, so I can't help thinking that because I see it every single day. Sorry.

Brad Paisley isn't from the confederate south, nor are his ancestors.

Thus, making this song even funnier.

Eh I would think there are racists on both sides, but just in different forms.

I think the further we divide and classify people by ethnicity, the more we perpetuate racism. Are the left wingers really non racist? Or do they just share some common goals and exploit racial groups for votes?

But still, your quote of a douchebag doesn't really address the comment made by retrodude implying that right wingers are racists.

The funny thing is, many of those people were Democrats 30 years ago.

And the left wing/right wing thing is actually a position on economic theory. We've tried to turn it into a judge on social theory, but it really doesn't accurately reflect it. I think the Libertarian's chart using economic theory on the X-axis and social theory on the Y-axis is better, though I'd prefer to make it three dimensional and have foreign policy form a Z-axis to measure political views.
