Awesome looking games - I don't have time to read the whole write-up right now, but what would you say the best console versions are? I already have a Genesis port of one of the games, but it's a little iffy.

I do have a C64 but I can't imagine trying to track down an old Turrican floppy.

the Genesis ones are the best. They have the least amount of stuff cut, and the gameplay is mostly there. They look terrible and sound awful, and still have loads changed or cut. There really isn't any good console ports of the Turrican games.

I'd say, if you're serious about the games but can't play with a computer, track down an Amiga CD32 and burn RGCD's Turrican Trilogy port. it contains Turrican 1 and 2, along with Turrican 3 (an Amiga port of Mega Turrican).

They really should be played on some sort of commodore system, or maybe an Atari ST.

What a coincidence! A certain someone is going to be getting an amiga cd32 in the mail fairly soon!

Invest in a uIEC if you have a C64. Also, if you like Turrican, check out Thexder. It was obviously a big influence on Turrican.

Nice score! I have boxed copies of the entire amiga trilogy and my disks work, but I play usually on the CD32 with the trilogy collection out of convenience (and a fear that my floppies will die).

If you're going to play these games on an Amiga, I deeply recommend picking up an Amiga gravis gamepad. They pop up on ebay from time to time, and are kinda pricey, but very much worth it. Turrican 3 supports a CD32 joypad fully, so you have a button dedicated to jump, but Turrican 1 and 2 do not. The Amiga Gravis Gamepad has 2 face buttons dedicated to up and down button, which, when coupled with Turrican's 2 button controls, effectively gives you a 3 button setup. It's the way I play - having a dedicated button to jump just makes a world of difference to me as an American who could never wrap my head around "Up to jump."

Sound advice! Similarly, you can invest in a CF Flash Kit if you have an Amiga.

I'll check out Thexder, thanks for the recommendation.

Actually, the coincidence was that Bone just purchased one of the 2 amigas in our big lot sales thread.

Perhaps in the broadest of terms they are part of his legacy, but the Super Turrican games (and Mega Turrican) were vast depatures from what he was doing on the Commodore systems and the NES. They're simply different types of games.

If you want to see his 16-bit venture, you'll have to look towards Rendering Ranger: R2, his lone 16-bit title (and ALSO made entirely by him).
I think it is, even if he did not work on them. Without his work, I don't think we would have the Turrican series at all. Though I do wish he had a hand in its development.

I'd love to get my hands on Rendering Ranger: R2, but...heh, I'm not that rich. Please do me a favor and play a round for me..

Thanks for the info, all.

I have Turrican on Sega Genesis, I'll admit that I haven't made it past the first level without Game Genie. There's two major problems. One is that up causes your character to jump even though jumping is also mapped to one of the buttons! Seems like they kept that in there as a "tribute" to the old C64 controls or something - I constantly find myself jumping by accident as I guess I sometimes subtly press up without realizing it. The other problem is that the life bar is useless as there's no recovery time, a single enemy can touch you and drain all your health in about one second. I'm not sure if this happens in the computer versions too.

Anyway, if I have a chance I will check out the Amiga CD32 ports. And I did get a chance to read the whole write-up just now. Nice work, Sonic.
