Sega CD Model 1 Repair

Post by molotovwars »

I fired up a Model 1 Sega CD that I just got, everything seemed to be going fine. It booted up the main screen and asked me to put a disc in, which I did then it just ejected the disc, and this process continued.

I immediately went on the google for answers and came across a topic at Cheap Ass Gamer started the same day:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/sho ... ost4908847

Where someone shared the insight:
Sega CD 1's that keep ejecting can be:

1 - Closed tray switch not being activated. If they've been taken apart & not put back together properly, the limit switch never gets tripped. There is a large timing gear with little plastic nubs that activate the limit switches. This can also cause it to recall the tray for no reason once opened - if the open switch never gets closed.

2 - Stretched belt on laser mechanism. The initial Sega CDs have a bad design that swings the entire large laser assembly down to load a CD. When you push the tray in, the mech swings up, locks in place, and engages the CD. If the belt is old / stretched, it can't make it the last little bit to lock it in.
I also sent an email to oldschoolgamer (the guy/site who does retro game system repairs) and was told they no longer service model 1 Sega CDs. :(

Now, in the CAG thread the guy said that when in place everything in the Sega CD actually worked, so I'm looking at where to go from here to get mine working.

you have to re adjust the large tray gear so the small knob on the gear is pushing on the swich you do this by pulling the tray out all the way. the you will see to two small clips on each side of the tray. gently pull on the tray and pull one clip back at a time very gently as these parts are very small. wean the tray is free pull it to the end and lift it up verticly it will pop out.
then unscrew the magnetic top of the cd holder that keeps the cd in place. after that turn the large gear untill the cd reader is in the "locked up" position. take out the screw that holds on the "large" gear. re-adjust it so that the little knob on the bottom is pushing the swicth "just enugh to make contact". put the tray back in the closed position and do not let the gear move wile doing this. last put it all together just the way it was. make shure you put the sheilding back on this will prevent static from harming the delacate circutry beacuse the sheild acts as a ground.
remember to use all the static sheilding that came with your console it wil increse increase its life span. note just one tooth on the gear can mean having it not connect. if you cant get it just right glue on a spacer to the back of the swich (not recomended) to enshure that it will connect.
