How do you guys avoid the toxins when opening your consoles

Post by 01toubib »

I couldn't find an exact place to put this thread, but I figure since a lot of us in the section open up our consoles, I was just curious if you guys have any tips. I was opening up PS3's all day today and the crap that I got on my hands I can't imagine is very healthy. Are there special gloves or anything you guys might suggest? How do you guys cope with that stuff that gets on your hands?

What gets on your hands? I've opened numerous PS3s and thousands more smart phones and laptops. Usually not much to get on your hands unless its liquid damaged.

The one that was trouble-some was an overheated YLOD console. I got like this gold power all over my hands, it looked like it came from the GPU and CPU so I'm guessing fried thermal paste? It took a while to get off I had to get a old toothbrush to get the gunk off my hands so I could eat lunch.

Came from those burnt squares on the side. I didn't touch them directly, but it spread all over the parts of the console and I didn't notice until my hands were reflexive gold.

Well whatever is getting on your hands, I can't imagine why latex gloves wouldn't work. Or vinyl, if you prefer or are allergic to latex. A box of 100 should cost you less than $10.

Yea that's what I ended up doing. I thought I'd check in here first and see if anyone had any tips. You never know, I work on cars a lot as well and the oil and fluids used to ruin the work gloves I'd use. A car forum I'm on recommended for some Kevlar shop gloves and they were magic for working on cars. So I was thinking maybe there was some hidden trick people on here use to work on consoles so I was all ears to some advice. I guess we are still a little old school here, bare hands ftw.

Before you eat, wash your hands and forearms in Lava soap. Get the bar form, not the gel.

You wear gloves while working on a car? I must be old school, I use left over engine oil to clean my hands. Oh yeah also love Lava soap, better then Ajax. I also hate Lead Free solder, maybe I should have a HazMat label attached to my butt.

Gojo is pretty good, too. And you can even get a bottle with a nail brush attached to the side of it. Very useful.
