I could be wrong, but I am almost positive that the "SMT" was only added to the western releases, and even then, only added for the third game. There was no "SMT" on Persona" Revelations or Persona 2" Eternal Punishment as far as I recall.

Check out google image searches for japanese ps2 copies of Persona 4. They lack the "SMT" at the top of the cover.

Still, I wouldn't say its incorrect to call Persona a spinoff of SMT, as they do share a lot of siilarities. I just think its more a case of them using what they already knew to make a new franchise, which it appears they had a lot more faith in, since Persona made it out of Japan before any SMT title.

Firstly, I forgot about this topic.

Second, thanks for all the replies!

I forgot to mention in the first post that I've spent a significant amount of time playing Persona 3... To make a long story short, I loved the combat but hated the social-stuff and calendar system.

I'm currently torn between checking out Nocturne or getting Soul Hackers (which gets a 3DS port in a couple weeks but I don't know if it is considered a "true" SMT title or not).

If you loved the combat from Persona 3, you will love Nocturne. It has the same system of trying to take advantage of weaknesses and immunities to get extra turns. However, where Persona 3 has Sim stuff, Nocturne has more fighting

Yes, its a pretty hard game, but honestly, thats what makes it. It has this great, lonely atmosphere to it (Very opposite of Persona), and the difficulty just seems so fit for it.

I really hope they port Nocturne to Vita or 3DS someday. I've started it twice but never finished!

I may check out Nocturne then.

That's a few months away. I think that's enough time to play through two or three rpg's to get more familiar with the series.

Have you watched gameplay of SMT IV yet? Graphics look damn fine for a 3DS game. 8)

And I'd like some enhanced ports, too. I'd be down for some SMT on Vita.
