RPS wrote an excellent memorial article about one of the most important video game developers to have ever existed:

It's times like this that make me want to play Monkey Island. It's also unfortunate that with Disney controlling their IPs, I doubt we will ever see these games on GOG.

Sad to see it happen, but I'm not surprised. It's a shame to see all those IPs they had be locked away for so long, I wonder if Disney plans on letting interested parties license some of the old adventure games and put them out on mobile OS's finally.

Interesting On Topic Trivia: The original Pirates Of The Caribbean film was originally planned to be a film version of Monkey Island. When they couldn't work out a deal for the rights, they grafted the ideas they had onto an IP they already owned. Now that Disney owns Monkey Island, could we possibly see a proper adaptation? I hope so.

I hope that Double Fine can get the rights from them and do another game in the universe. It doesnt have to be about Guybrush, but the world is just so ripe.

Yet another PC gaming icon bites the dust... I wonder when is id Software's turn? Too bad many young/uneducated people only know them from all the mediocre and substandard Star Wars games they've produced during the late 1990s and 2000s. It's ironic how originally the people who worked at Lucas Arts weren't allowed to make Star Wars games even though that's why every one applied for a job there. And they ended up creating many notable and innovative games. Yet when all those creative people finally left the company and it really started mass producing Star Wars games, none them had any significance besides Star Wars galaxies (MMORPG, developed by Sony Online Entertainment) and Knights of the Old Republic (developed by Bioware)

That one started out as an Atari 800 game though. The Atari 5200 port of Rescue on Fractalus is actually the only reason why I'd like to own a 5200 :)

Dark Forces was the first to do some neat things in the FPS realm.

Dark Forces isn't from the dark age, they released good Star Wars game during that era (the X-Wing series). The dark age started after 1998. They released Outlaws, Curse of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango during 1997&1998. After that point on they didn't really develop any non lisence games worth mentioning. Between 1984 and 1998 majority of the games they made were original titles. 1999 onwards about 80-90% of the games they made/released were Star Wars games.

What are those neat things you speak of? I've heard that Dark Forces was the first game with mouse look but I don't know if it's true or not. By 1996 there were many FPS games that had advanced beyond the Doom formula.
I'm not trying to knock off Dark Forces, I've never played it (yet) so I'm just intrested to know what unique things it did since you make it sound like it was the first FPS game that did anything special.

Dark Forces was the first game to allow rooms to be above each other. If you look at Doom you'll notice that the entire game is actually on a 2D plane; the things like ramps, stairs, and elevators are just visual tricks.
