Quick question for the manga/anime fans among us.

Post by J T »

I love the art style on the "Debutante" album covers. It's looks as if Alfons Mucha decided to make anime characters. Are there any mangas or anime that use this kind of style? Maybe someone knows who the artist of these album covers is?

This style reminds me a bit of Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. I enjoyed it well enough.

No idea who the artist is, but all those colors reminds me of the Mushihime-sama Futari box art.

It did use some elements of it, though more often than not I felt like more traditional coloring would have been preferable.

Mononoke also used that flat textured kinda look, though more in attempt to achieve an ukiyo-e style than art nouveau.

I can think of a number that use similar styles occasionally, but not all the time.

You can definitely find some Vocaloid fan art like that. I'll try to think of some anime that's like that. Might find some josei manga that is similar.

I'm kind of reminded of Paradise Kiss which is unfortunately out of print and kind of tough to find. It's a series aimed squarely at women, but I still think it's great.
It's based on a manga by the same author of Nana. But I haven't seen/read that anime/manga so I can't vouch for the quality!

Not so much in terms of character designs, but if memory serves, the art direction of Madoka Magica can also be kind of similar at times.

I see elements of Junko Kitano's artwork and Yoshitaka Amano's artwork (more the colors than the lines), but I also see bits of Atelier Marie. Very interesting.

More directly related to your question, though it's not by any means an exact match, you might like the visual appeal of Kenji Tsuruta's work. He's not super prolific. His editors apparently hate him because he's super slow, but his work is fantastic. The only US-released work of his I know of is the single-volume Spirit of Wonder, put out by Dark Horse.

That was the first one that came to my mind too.

I can't think of any other anime/manga off the top of my head, but it does make me think about the Batwoman comics. Specifically the Detective Comics run, starting at #857.

Really similar stylings there, though maybe not on the same level as the images up top.
