uLaunchElf: the operating system/file manager of sorts for PS2.
ESR: Plays patched backup games directly with no need for swapping.
HD Loader: Plays games off the installed hard drive
Simple Media System: Plays mp3, divx, and other media locally or via LAN.

is that site gone now? I've tried to go there several times, But I keep getting error messages.
Temporarily down, I'm sure.

I recently moved and loss wired access to the router, so my PC is on a wireless dongle now. This spelled disaster for my PS2, as it doesnt work with wireless dongles as you might imagine. Just wanted to chime in with confirmation that with a crossover cable, I can connect the PS2 to your PC, and with the right networking configuration, play the music and videos on password protected WinXP shared folders and install games like before. Good stuff.

What's your average upload speed for games via ftp to the hdd? Tried it out for the first time last week since configuring things is easier with the current setup, used to hook up the hdd directly or with a ide-to-usb cable. I really don't mind how slow it is since I do it ocasionally and the ps2 can stay in another room, but comparing it to xbox its slow as hell. Maybe not average speed just an estimated of how long it takes you for a big game.
Consoles: NES, Famicom, SNES, GC, GB DMG, GB Pocket, GBC, GBA, DSI XL, N64, VBoy, NDS, 3DSXL, Wii, SMS, GEN+CD+32X, GG, SAT, DC, WS, WS Color, NGPC, XBOX, 360, PS1, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, 3DO, CD-I, NGCD, Actionmax, TG16+CD, TE, PCE-DUO, Odyssey2, Playdia, 2600, Lynx & JAG.

It takes 30 min to upload a 4.3GB ISO. The PS2's LAN port is severely capped. There's nothing you can do about it.

So I finally took the time to wrap my head around all of this and softmod my memory card. All I really wanted to be able to do was play backups/imports. I ended up borrowing an older PS2 from a friend and using the codebreaker method of booting the installer (codebreaker won't work with USB drives on the newest Slims). It was a lot of reading and a lot to chew on at first to understand free MC boot, but once I finally figured out what programs did what, it really wasn't that bad. Now that I've got one modded mem card, and a USB thumb drive with the install files, I basically have a softmod kit. I stick my modded card in the 2nd slot, a normal mem card in slot one, and use ulaunchelf to run the Free MC Boot installer off of the USB drive.

Does anyone know if ESR will let you play legit imports? or only backups? I'd like to buy some import games, but don't want to chip or use swap magic. EDIT: nevermind, looks like I can't load legit imports without swapping discs. damn.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

Yeah, I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this. So once you mod a memory card, that's all you need to load backups?

I personally don't have Codebreaker or Action Replay, but a friend of mine does. I think it's a way older version though, so it may be incompatible.

If you have some blank DVD-Rs just copy your imports to them, and patch with the ESR patcher before burning. Then load with ESR. That'll protect your import discs for you as well. In fact, if you setup the exploit properly, it will detect ESR patched discs automatically and run ESR for you. It acts just like a retail game of your region would.

1. Yes, keep reading

2. I got one (codebreaker) from gamestop for $15 new, but the codebreakers USB support will only work on 70000 and earlier (first model slim or older). I had to use a friends PS2 since i have a 79001 slim. you only need the older version console for the initial install, make sure to do the "multi-version" install so that the card will boot all models of PS2 consoles. once you've got an exploited card, you can use that card in slot two to boot the installer off of your thumbdrive and mod another card in slot one.

Yeah, I've got it set up to that point right now, import backups boot instantly. On my USB stick, I setup my install folder with the correct ESR.elf file, so the freemcboot istaller loaded it in for me. You could transfer it (ESR) using ulaunchelf from a USB stick to the memory card after installing free MC boot, and then specify the path in the freemcboot settings. Since you already have to get BOOT.elf, might as well put in ESR at the same time when youre setting up to do the mod.

I do the same thing with dreamcast games(store my original imports and play the back-ups), But i like to be able to play original discs that i buy used, just to be on the safe side. I'll live.

I do the same. The exploit uses so little memory card space when you keep your apps on USB. The only thing I keep on the mem card with the essential files is the configurator, and its only like 100KB if I remember right.
