We all know of your strong hatred for DE, but the only thing I didn't like were any of the endings. They all seemed to have some negative, destructive conclusion towards JC, humanity, and the world in general. The rest of the game was spot on!

SS2, I can't remember exactly how far I made it as it's been quite a while, but I did try more than once to give it a chance. I remember heading down a ramp into a lap with monkeys or something in it. I got a little past where you start running into the former humans. That's about all I can tell you.
Sounds like very early part of the game

You have a very twisted view of garbage. I can understand not liking the way the game plays, the endings or how outdated the game is graphically, but garbage? Well implemented RPG system, freedom of choiche in how you play the game and in how you approach different missions and problems, The Dev Team Thinks of Everything, well researched and believable setting and excellent writing. Even if you dislike the story and characters, you can't deny the fact that the writing is superb and "deep".
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Kinda been in a SRPG mood lately thanks to Valkyria Chronicles (and Disgaea a little bit). Decided to order the first Shining Force off of ebay.

Never played any of the games in the series. Excited to check this one out. Anyone want to tell me anything about it before I dive in later?

The sequels are much better.

I kinda expect as much.

You know how sometimes it's hard to go back to a game after playing its sequels because you're so used to certain refinements? I kinda imagine if I'm playing this game first, unaware of the refinements made later, I might be able to more easily enjoy it.

If it's a dated experience on its own, I don't really mind.

The combat is pretty easy to get a handle on, but there are a few things. If you're not using a walkthrough, there are lots of hidden characters throughout the game to find by talking to certain people or objects. Also, not all characters are created equally. Some of the characters you get at the beginning of the game plateau hard around midway through, don't be afraid to dump them. Conversely, some of the best characters in the game join really late but at low levels. If you're optimizing a team you should pick these people, but I personally found that it wasn't worth it and just beat the game regardless.

Also, healers are a massive pain to level up (as killing enemies is the only decent way to gain experience). Try to find lots of opportunities to let them get the last shot on enemies throughout the game or they'll just be underleveled the entire time.

Seems like a lot of games have this quirk. I'll keep that in mind.

I've never played this SRPG. Is there any method to engage in buddy bashing to help out your characters, like in Final Fantasy Tactics?

I always keep a healer right next to my main swordsman in every Shining Force game. Mainly because, in several titles, the main character dying means game over, even if the rest of the your party remains alive. This lets me let my healer level up easily and keeps my swordsman safe.

This method of play is encouraged by the developers, especially in Shining Force 3 with the friends system where you get perks for being around the same people regularly.
