put in another hour tonight. I'm at the part where you're on a roof with a helicopter of troops coming at you. Tough. I'm not as good dealing with enemy fire as I am killing headcrabs and shit.
Also, if anyone else is playing DC version and has questions on controls or anything DC related, I have the official Prima guide and am glad to help out if I can.

Re: Together Retro: Half-Life
I played this a lot last year and never finished it. Maybe I'll knock it out since we're on it this month.
I don't remember where I'm at, but I can't be much further than 4 or 5 levels from the end.

Haha, I understand. It took me a long time to get used to that style of combat with them, but I've played through Half-Life, Half-Life: Source, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, and Black Mesa. Most of these I've beaten multiple times. So I've gotten used to the headcrabs. Don't worry, you'll get there. And in the meantime, no shame in plugging them with bullets to keep them from getting you.prunkhaft wrote:I have mixed results with timing my crowbar attack on them. I have noticed that while the map offers precious few health consoles, ammo is quite abundant. I have the difficulty on medium, btw. So while a headcrab attack that does 20 dam to myself is devastating from a health standpoint, plugging the offender with a few bullets is easily afforded.Ack wrote:A tip for headcrabs: if you are good enough, you can hit them with the crowbar in mid-air. But seeing as that's not likely the case, I suggest sidestepping and then rushing up and beating them into piles of goo with the crowbar the instant they leap past you. It helps conserve pistol bullets. If you can't sidestep or do something to get out of the way, just use the pistol. Don't waste any further ammunition on them.
It's not that I'm constantly under siege by them or anything. They just annoy the hell out of me. You think you clear a room of them, then...
Re: Together Retro: Half-Life
Played the first couple of levels last night. The Source version of the game looks quite good with all the settings maxed out. I also forgot how fast and fluid this game feels (especially compared to more recent FPS titles).
I think the last time I played Half-Life (circa 2001) I was as much younger than Gordon Freeman as I am older than him playing it this time. That makes me feel like an old dude.

Re: Together Retro: Half-Life
I have Half Live on steam, but not the source version. I was reading the steam forums and noticed people complaining about the forced HD and visual update sometime in 2013 for HL. Did Valve update the regular version to Source, and if not is it worth the $10 upgrade?
Re: Together Retro: Half-Life
Here's one part that certainly sets this game apart from other FPS -- after seeing this, this could be called the "I wasn't even supposed to be here today" moment or the "Worst Day On The Job" moment -

^believe it or not, that part was relatively easy with DC controller.
Put another hour in. I'm in the Silo area, where you ride the little thingy on train tracks. (I'm obviously terrible at describing where I am). The monsters (monsters? Aliens? What are they?) I'm encountering are getting tougher now...

Believe it or not, that part is relatively easy no matter how you play.noiseredux wrote:^believe it or not, that part was relatively easy with DC controller.![]()
So you're getting to the rail segment, eh? That portion is a bit long unfortunately, and it's definitely not one of my favorites. But the rail cart does make for a handy piece of cover.
