Crazy idea for playing original GameBoy on DS/DS Lite...

Post by BitFaced »

I have a weird suggestion for playing original/black GameBoy cartridges on DS/DS Lite. First we get a Famicom Cartridge adapter for the GBA slot (like the CYBER Familator Lite), then we use a Famicom to NES adapter, and finally we use the RetroVision for playing old GameBoy/Dual Mode games (on your NES).
It'd be weird, bulky and possibly impossible, but it sounds like we might finally be able to play GameBoy cartridges on DS/DS Lite!

I can't imagine this working but it would kick ass if it did.

lol talk about your frankenstien work. :D

Or y'know... for the cost of less than 1 of those adapters, you could pick up some flavor of GB to play on. Just a thought ;)
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

I don't think the only limitation is physicality of the cartridges. It actually wouldn't make a lick of sense for Nintendo to purely make it so GameBoy cartridges didn't fit, but still technically worked on the hardware.

I imagine even if you got it in there ... it still wouldn't work. As far as I know, the DS does have one of the processors that was used in the GameBoy, but this is for some audio support on various GBA games. It's unlikely they produced legacy circuitry for GameBoy games to properly execute.

But ... you can try it. An easier method might just be wiring up the GameBoy cart, though, just to see if it works.

Yep, Cronozilla is right. The DS simply doesn't have the hardware needed to run GB games.

Based on what Bitfaced said, it would not matter about the lack of GB hardware in the DS. The Retrovision is a Gameboy in an NES cart made by Retrousb several years ago and has been sold out for some time. So it could technically work, but two issues:
1. Not all NES carts work on a famicom to NES adapter - specifically some repros have issues
2. Finding a Retrovision is not easy or cheap.

Ah yeah, if one of the devices supplies the necessary hardware then it might at least be possible. Would be cool to see.

This falls into compromising portability with all the adaptors in light of inexpensive options such as a GBA. On the other hand, the modding aspect of "Hey I made this work!"

I pulled pics of the pieces you mentioned. Looks feasible, but expensive and it kills the portable aspect. Definitely won't fit in the pocket unless you are pushing a return to cargo pants. :D

Please post the results if you do this. Now where is Bacteria! Bet he can make it all fit in a smaller package.
