Will this setup work with the slg3000?

Post by jambolangus »

I currently have my genesis and super Nintendo hooked up through scart to a scart switch. The switch is connected to a scart-to-yuv (scart to component converter) which ends up going to my plasma tv. (scart>component>TV) All that works fine.

I'm trying to figure out how to add the slg3000 in there. The setup I am thinking is

Scart>component>component to VGA cable>TV ( the TV has a VGA port on the back)

Most things I read about the slg3000 have a scaler involved somewhere in the hookup and I'm not sure I understand why.

Any thoughts?

According to the FAQ, no that will not work. It requires a real VGA signal.

The reason for the scaler is to get a 480P VGA signal out of your older console's 240P @15Khz RGB signal. The SLG needs a 480P or 600P VGA signal to add scanlines to. The "CGA/EGA/YUV to VGA" scaler that's sold with it is simply the cheapest scaler that will do the transcoding and scaling job making it ready for the SLG3000 to do it's magic (I hear it's available on ebay for cheaper than Arcadeforge sells it). The component signal you mentioned will need to be transcoded and scaled, so that's where the scaler comes in. Since you have that transcoder, you will not need to buy a Sync Strike to get the video from your consoles' SCART cable into the scaler.

Thanks for the help!

So all I need is a scaler like this? http://compare.ebay.com/like/2711599339 ... si=y&cbt=y

So the incoming Component connection gets transcoded into VGA?

Hmm, now that I've looked at this for a while, I'm not sure how one connects a power supply to this unless you are connecting it to an arcade cabinet. I might just go with this instead.

Actually, the first auction that showed up comes with a power supply, it plugs in on the top-right. If you got one without, you could just cut the male USB end off something (broken USB mouse?), bare the red&black wires and use the 2 screw-connectors beside the power socket to power it.

I've read good things about the HD box Pro & it's cheap clones too tho.

Another option, albeit more expensive, would be to buy a SLG-in-a-Box. It combines the SLG3000, Sync Strike, and GBS8220 scaler into one device. It would also take your scart to component converter out of the mix and give you a slightly better picture since RGB > Component.

I would agree, but I've never been able to see any noticeable difference between RGB and the result from my Scart-component converter, nor any lag. The main reason I'll recommend keeping the transcoder instead of the sync-strike is I did see some incompatability on a couple consoles for certain games - the picture would crap out for bits at a time. Specifically I remember having trouble with Castlevania SOTN on PS1 - the picture blinked in and out enough to make it unplayable with the (bought in separate pieces but same as) SLG in a box yet when I ran the SCART-Component transcoder into the scaler rather than the Sync-Strike, the problem disappeared. Granted it might just be my cables, since my XRGB-3 had similar problems until I found tweaks in it's settings for those inputs. In any case, no need to spend that much money since you're already nearly there IMO. Since you're planning to use the SLG3000, any tiny degredation in the picture from transcoding will be completely masked by having the scanlines present.

Great info guys. I decided on getting the slg3000 and then the HD Box Pro since it seems like a simple plug and play solution. I was tempted to go with the slg in a box, but its about 100 bucks more than what the current setup costs and from what Anapan said it seems like there isn't a huge difference.

Thanks!

Just got the HD box pro. The picture seems a bit shaky... Also am I supposed to be getting 480p because its only showing 480i at the moment.
