I think Paper Mario is another that blurs the line of being an RPG.

I also do not like Super Mario RPG.

A big part of RPGs for me is the characters, world, and plot. While mario and company are iconic and fit a platformer, they come up woefully short for what I look for in an rpg.

The Paper Mario games are intentionally light on plot, but they're very well written and funny. I love the dialogue in those games.

Ill give them another shot then. Next time I am in the mood for an RPG.

One thing I love about both Mario RPG and Paper Mario is that they are turn-based, but use button timings to both attack and block. I love games that do this, as it feels much more involved than a typical turn-based rpg.

I actually thought that the story tidbits in Super Mario RPG were perfect. Too much story would have alienated Mario fans, but they still put in Mallow (Who has a decently touching little story), and Geno (Who is actually the good guy in this struggle that happened to fall into the Mushroom Kingdom)

I was also a bit let down when I first tried Paper Mario, as Mario RPG was my first non-Pokemon rpg, and I absolutely love the game. Coming back to it after some time, though, I think Paper Mario is also an excellent game.

Ever played the Shadow Hearts games? The judgement ring system is similarly involving and makes the battles a lot more fun.

@SonicRetard

I suppose the Sega CD beats the Turbo CD when looking at only US releases - mainly due to the strength of the 4 Working Designs titles.

As I speak Japanese I don't really differentiate between regions - and the PC Engine CD had some phenomenal Japan-only RPGs: Ys IV, Xak 1 + 2, Legend of Xanadu 1 & 2, etc...

I played the first game and absolutely loved it. The judgement ring is awesome. It felt like a vamped-up Legend of Dragoon. For some reason, I had a harder time getting into the 2nd game.

My man! I'm also pretty fluent in japanese (over a decade of informal training, 4 years of university training, been to japan, etc) and I'm the same way. I normally take in a console's world collection when I discuss a system. However, I was replying to someone in specific who mentioned that comparing the domestic Turbo library vs the domestic Sega CD library would be a bit more fair (implying the world release list was unfairly weighted towards the PC Engine). I just felt the opposite - that compairing the domestic market for both systems gave the Sega CD an unfair advantage for the very same reasons.

Both are excellent systems, though. And best of all, most of the games you listed either have gotten, or are getting fan translations.

I tried to get into Super Mario RPG and I just didn't really care for it. The Paper Mario series is a lot of fun, especially The Thousand Year Door. I'm currently playing Super Paper Mario and surprisingly, I'm enjoying it even though it's more of a platformer.

I didn't care for the PlayStation 1. I think that every worthwhile game, with the exception of Crash Bandicoot, had an equally as good/better counterpart on Saturn or N64. Not only that, but even most PS1 exclusives were trumped by other games of the same genre on competitive hardware.
3D fighter:
Tekken 2&3
Battle Area Toshinden
Bushido Blade
2D/2.5D platformer:
Oddworld games
Heart of Darkness
Silhouette mirage
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Klonoa
Pandemonium
3D platformer:
Ape Escape
Jumping Flash! 1&2
Survival Horror:
Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1&3 (got RE2 1½ years before the N64)
Kart racer:
Crash Team Racing
Racing:
Gran Turismo
Wipeout
Driver
SHMUP:
Einhänder
N2O
Not to mention JRPGs

I could make a longer list and include more genres but I think I already made my point
