I'm not even sure if I've had a "real" yam. American "yams" are always sweet potatoes.elmagicochrisg wrote:Hmm...RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Yeah but that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nicely does it?elmagicochrisg wrote:You mean ham 'n sweet potatoes right?...

They are quite different. African yams have very rough skin like tree bark, and white very slimy flesh. The slimy texture goes away after preparation though. They are much bigger too...RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I'm not even sure if I've had a "real" yam. American "yams" are always sweet potatoes.

They are a great substitute for regular potatoes, and much healthier. Potatoes are part of the Solanaceae family just like tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, which should all be avoided by people with arthritis / osteoporosis. And yams have a much lower glycemic index, which makes them much more ideal for people with diabetes - and people trying to avoid getting diabetes for that matter...

Share your recipe?...Adam wrote:I'm making home made chicken curry tonight. It tastes great! It is incredibly easy to make, even for someone like myself who can't cook very well. But this I can cook really well and my friends always asks for second servings.

I usually don't purchase pre-made patties, but The Fresh Market has a bogo offer on gourmet crab cake patties that I can't pass up. First off, screw maryland and their overpriced, overrated, and under crabbed crab cakes. Those crab cakes are for tourists whose money is burning a whole in their pocket.
These guys at the Fresh Market have crab as the number one ingredient, as it should be. I'll saute these patties until a bit crisp, and serve a cole slaw and salad on the side.
We had chicken wings last night. So unhealthy for you, but the wife is on spring break, so we bent our rules a bit.

So how do I get the first cookbook(s)?Luke wrote:I've been in the kitchen more than usual lately, experimenting, as I'm compiling another cook book. It has been interesting to say the least, and so far so good.
We are doing a rosemary pot roast tonight (since the meat was on sale yesterday), with a spinach salad and some Kroger Private Select Orange Marmalade on toasted french bread. And while I do not typically buy marmalade or jelly, this stuff is amazing and contains natural ingredients - ie the first on the list is Cane Sugar.
Tomorrow will most likely be salmon, since its dirt cheap right now for some reason - around $1.75 a pound for wild caught Alaskan (usually its around $3-4 a pound). We have been taking salmon and making a "patty" with egg, garlic, pepper, and some crushed crackers. But it usually comes out more like corn beef hash and is good on a spinach salad.
