Hence why I like to turn the lyrics off. Not only can I sing myself if I want to, but, the soundtrack takes on more of a dance vibe that's less intrusive during gameplay.

Regarding Sonic R... I think it's really quite a good racing game which is a bit controversial in itself. I feel like nobody even bothered trying to press B to accelerate or use the 3D pad and shoulder buttons to play. Once you get to grips with the controls, you can run the courses incredibly quickly and smoothly.

If I have any complaint, like most 32bit racing games, it needs more tracks.

I've always found dance and club tracks to be excellent racing music. Although, the music certainly is from it's own time period. Daytona USA had some incredibly cheesy music that was also awesome.
" I wanna fly sky high
Let's go together
I wanna fly sky high
Let's go together
I wanna...
Yeah, hey, oh
Yeah, flying high
Feeling good

Blue, blue skies
Blue, blue skies, I see"

i love that song too, but the phrasing is so awkward. something about the way he says "Let's gOOOoooOoOo to-ge-THAAAAA"

Are there really that many trilogies that are comparable? You may possibly be right.

I dont know, basically any game that has 3 consecutive sequels can be considered a trilogy regardless of what came after, though no one really likes to think of trilogies like that.

Maybe risk wasn't the most accurate term, but its undeniable Nintendo deviated with the majority of their franchises during the 6th generation.

Majority of their franchises is a pretty strong statement.

Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Twilight Princess, Pokemon Stadium and F-Zero aren't wildly different. I wouldn't call Windwaker ambitious either just because it is cel shaded (which was starting to become trendy around then), it made a few fanboys whine because Link was a kid again, but I don't see how it is any more unique than any of the other Zeldas.

I don't really think risk when I think of Gamecube. To me the Gamecube was just a more powerful n64.

I couldn't disagree more, but I suppose that's the point of this thread. Launching a console with a survival horror entry in their marquee franchise? Making a cel-shaded and cartoony Zelda with hardly any land in the game? Pouring a bunch of marketing money into bringing a life simulator to the west? Making the focus of the next Mario game NOT be about strictly platforming? Releasing a platformer that used a two-button rhythm controller for movement? Trying to make the RTS genre work on a console, while marketing the genre to younger audiences? Making one of their biggest platforming series into an FPS? EVERYTHING about Chibi-Robo? I don't know about you, but if that isn't the very definition of risk, I don't know what is.

The Gamecube was Nintendo's space to branch out and try new things in an attempt to make up for a less-than-successful last generation. It was essentially Nintendo's Dreamcast, at least in terms of software mentality.

- Western RPGs are getting increasingly bloated and boring. Older games like Ultima 4/5/6, Betrayal at Krondor, Arcanum, and Planescape: Torment are much more fun and interesting than Mass Effect, Oblivion/Skyrim, etc.
- The SNES controller is best the controller of all time. Dreamcast is #2.
- Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia are the best 6th gen RPGs. Eternal Sonata is the best 7th gen RPG.
- Secret of Evermore is severely underrated and is better than Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3.
- Sony and Microsoft consoles are bland and soulless. The games libraries are great, but the systems themselves lack character and feel utilitarian like a DVD player or VCR.
- About half of the "terrible" games AVGN has reviewed are actually decent.

This is common knowledge amongst RPG and retro gamers. There's two things to blame: publishers and Xbox. Three if you count casual gamers.

The first Playstation and Xbox weren't. PS2/3 and Xbox 360 are.

Damn straight

Care to elaborate on the Dreamcast part? I know this is unpopular gaming opinnions and all, but I want to hear your reasoning. The controller feels great and has a great shape. The triggers are nice. The D-pad is nice in some games but it feels too high and the edges are a too sharp; the Saturn D pad is much better. The controller wire that's connected to the wrong end of the controller is a minor annoyance, but the lack of second analog stick and L2/R2 are major, major limiting design flaws. Oh and even though the analog stick is nice, it could have a more comfortable texture, like the Playstation and Xbox 360 controllers have (layer of soft rubber).
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

The Dreamcast controller has the perfect ABXY button layout. I love how the shoulder buttons feel. The analog stick is fantastic and in the perfect spot. I know the d-pad supposedly sucks, but I've never played a game that used the d-pad outside of menus. VMUs are also cool as shit.

Not to prove/disprove anything, just as further conversation...

In some ways, those things are a weaker version of the kind of stuff the N64 brought. Shifting Mario to 3D and being a significant part of defining 3D platforming (and basically doing similar things with Zelda, etc). Pushed analog control back in, rumble, GB/GBA transfer and voice control. Increased split-screen style play via Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Smash, etc.

I think there were bigger moves made with the N64. The Gamecube built on that. Its library is more a product of the time than a deliberate strategy, I think.

I see it more that costs/sales are such that many of them are becoming more formulaic in execution. Where I'd like to see far more meaningful player choice, most of them seem happy to stick with the good/evil conversation options/etc.

That said, to me, part of it is the amount of focus that has shifted into MMOs.

- Sony and Microsoft consoles are bland and soulless. The games libraries are great, but the systems themselves lack character and feel utilitarian like a DVD player or VCR.

I think this might also have to do with being so used to them right now. In the late 90s, Windows 95 or Mac OS 8 were just kind of "there" too. Going back to them now makes things stand out more.

To me, the current consoles have a little more personality than before, since I spend a lot more time in the system GUI than in previous generations.

That said, I'll take a capable device that just works over a flawed, quirky one with "soul"
