VGA Box owners: I need your help

Post by brinda17 »

Hi everyone, yesterday I received a VGA Box in the mail that I had ordered. Unfortunately, I did not order it from RacketBoy, and I'm thinking I should have.

Right out of the box, it didn't work right. The display did show up on my LCD Tv, but there was no green color at all. I figured this out by adjusting the RGB settings on my Tv and discovering the green slider changed nothing. What I was left with was a very red or, pending adjustments, very blue display.

I took a look at the cable that goes into the Dreamcast, and 2 pins all of the way to the right (when the curved end of the cable is facing up) seemed to sit lower than the rest. I thought that maybe they weren't making proper contact inside the Dreamcast. I decided not to fool with the cable until I got to try the cable on a second LCD.

I tried the cable on my LCD at work and it yielded the same result. So, rather than going through a painful return/exchange process that could take a week or more to resolve, I got impatient and decided to bend/life those pins up with a tiny thumb tack. It took some time but I was careful and got it to work. The two right-most pins were now equal and only slightly lower than the rest. Since all of the pins get pushed down and flex when you plug it in, it seemed like they would make contact.

When I tried it out, it worked nicely. The green is now here and the color looks great. I didn't have a game or anything, so it just went to the menu. I did notice, however, and this is where I need your help, that there are a few lines that seem to flicker a bit in the blue background. This monitor is 22" with a native resolution of 1680x1050 and a VGA, Composite, S-Video, & DVI input. I assume it's possible that the lines of resolution are so much greater that it creates a flicker when the 480p is stretched over this quite massive monitor. But I would like to know if maybe it's a problem with the pins somehow. If you have seen this result or can verify that it's not due to faulty equipment, please let me know. I'd hate to have to return this VGA box, but I will if it's not performing as it should.

Thanks for your help!
