What MSX/MSX2 games do you guys recommend?
Just got an MSX emulator and a ton of roms, not really sure what games are good though.
The Koonami stuff is kind of obvious. Penguin Adventure, Snatcher SD, Metal Gear 1+2, Castlevania, Contra and Gradius are all games I'm going to check out. See this platformer called the Goonie get a few nods here and there.
Any one else know any gems for this console?

Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest also made it to the system.

I assume there are some key differences? Do you have any personal experience with them?
And thanks, I forgot about the Knightmare and Aleste games.
Hmm..should I play Ys III on MSX or just go to PC engine? Or are they close enough that it doesn't really matter?

Unfortunately, I have not played FF and Dragon Quest, but the video footage I saw of FF the graphics on the MSX are clearly inferior to the NES. Same goes with Ys III compared to the 16 bit systems, though it's not hideous compared to its 8 bit rivals.Violent By Design wrote:I assume there are some key differences? Since I have several handheld systems which could easily emulate MSX but not more advanced systems, my short-list is this:
Snatcher
SD Snatcher
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
1942
City Connection
Dragon Slayer 4
Glovellious
Xanadu
Usually I'm pretty thorough, but for MSX, the best games have been ported, and all it had going for it was a great add-on soundcard, and some developers that did great stuff later.
SD Snatcher is awesome.

I would refrain from playing Gradius or Parodius on a MSX computer since they couldn't scroll properly. Play the arcade versions instead, and for Parodius, the Parodius collection, though it isn't as good as later releases.

I dont have any interest in playing the original Gradius for similar reasons. It's sequels are exclusive for the MSX, so I'll probably check those outs.General_Norris wrote:I would refrain from playing Gradius or Parodius on a MSX computer since they couldn't scroll properly. Is there something special you have to do to run a Disk game on the MSX? i think Snatcher was on a Disk and not a cartridge, because the roms i find of it say DISK 1of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3, but when i try to run them it just takes me to a blue screen.

It's Japan-only but I believe there is a fair amount of English text in the game.Violent By Design wrote:Is Xanadu in English?
The only Xanadu title released in the US was Xanadu Next for the N-Gage.
