Final Fantasy XI - Ultimate Collection Released

Post by Blu »

Any buzz about this? Released on the 26th for Xbox 360 if I'm not mistaken. For $40, I might jump back into the fray, even for nostalgia's sake. It's the complete game, too.

With the reboot of FFXIV right around the corner, it seems like it's probably not the best move for Square to re-release something that could distract some of the cusotmers they're wanting on board for the XIV reboot.

Hm.

Spent my evening getting to Adoulin and unlocking jobs, etc.

It was released for PC as well. I wouldn't necessarily say it's taking away from FFXIV - most current FFXI players are either on board with that or they aren't.

The collected release is $10 more than the expansion all by itself. Gives people returning (or changing platforms) an all-inclusive option. I don't think the 360 has had a release since the 2008 collection that came out in late 2007. The PC has seen a couple collections since then.

Of note, it's probably the final PS2 release, albeit Japan-only for that platform.

Expansion itself is fairly sparse thus far it seems, but FFXI in general is a much faster game to get going in than it was years ago.

I saw this and was actually considering trying it out.

Then I saw that it's $12 a month. There's no way I'm bothering with that. I already pay for Xbox Live, I really don't want to put such a hefty price tag on top of that.

Now XIV on the other hand I'm trying to have some hope for.

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that FF XI is one of the few online 360 games that play without a gold account.

If you have a PC/PS3 it might be worth waiting for XIV:ARR. However, there's most likely going to be a monthly fee for it as well.

Yeah, you only need a Silver account to play on 360. I believe one reason that XIV wasn't planned for the 360 is due to SE's refusal to integrate their fees/etc into XBL.

The game runs fine on basically anything with hardware transform and lighting, which includes integrated graphics since the Core series at least. It runs (at low settings) on netbooks. The barrier to PC play is very low.

You can use content registered to your POL account on any platform, provided the data is installed. Buying the 360 version and acquiring the PC install data would allow you to play on both, for example. I've done that for secondary characters a few times.

Frankly, monthly fee for an MMO is a common complaint, but if you're playing actively it tends to be more than worth it. Can easily put 10-20 hours (or more) in every week for that same fixed cost.

I'm pretty sure they are going to have a monthly fee. What I'm hoping is that it will be cheaper than $12 a month.

Oh, I know that. I think monthly fee's are fair, especially for someone who might play the game constantly. But I don't know how much I'd be playing it, and even if I only need a silver membership there are still other games I like to have Gold for.

I very much doubt it will be. If anything, I could see them doing $15/mo. or so.

The only time I've seen SE do anything for pricing like that was offering a discount for people subscribing to both FFXI and FFXIV. Outside of when they didn't charge for FFXIV due to it sucking so badly.

I just started playing this on XBox 360. Years ago I set out to play all the main, numbered Final Fantasy games in order. SO IT'S TIME TO EXPERIMENT WITH FFXI! I'm not counting on completing any of the storylines, but I'm hoping to get a decent understanding of the game?

If you create your character(s) on Asura I can help you out in-game.

Nearly all the mission-based story content was designed for level 75 or below, and is fairly trivial at 99. Exceptions would be some of the final Wings of the Goddess missions (well, they're still not hard, just designed for 80 or 85 cap), and obviously the Seekers content, though if SE is true to form that storyline won't be "done" for 2-4 years yet.

Some of the newer content additions such as Abyssea and Voidwatch do have a story to go with them, but not nearly to the level that the expansion mission lines do.

I've done a lot of the mission lines recently for my mule - rank 10 Windurst, RoTZ, CoP, and ToAU. Most of it would be soloable on the right jobs, rest duo-able (I dual boxed them).

Since it'd be easy to write literally pages about the game, were there specific things you wanted to know?
