Japan PS3 Which hardware is the region lock?

Post by 01toubib »

Hey guys, I got a quick question. I have a broken Japanese PS3 that I decided I'm going to part out. Before I put it the parts for sale I'm just curious on which piece or pieces are the cause of the DVD region lock on the console. Is it the Blu-Ray Drive? Or is it the Motherboard? Maybe both? If anyone knows please feel free to pass the information along, it would be greatly appreciated. :D

I'm pretty sure it's entirely firmware related.

So the Blu-Ray Drive should be good to sell without concern of region lock right?

As I recall, the logic board of the blu ray drive on the ps3 is tied to the motherboard and won't work on a different ps3. You might run into problems trying to sell it.

Yea I thought so as well, however people have been able to figure out how to "remarry" different Blu-Ray Drives to logic boards, not sure if its a difficult process or not but it is possible.

Well, if you are planning to sell it, you should probably put some sort of big disclaimer about that I think. Wouldn't want angry customers who didn't know better after all.

Agreed, I think that's the best way to go about this at this point to be certain. Thanks for the help man.

No the drive is tired to the board attached to the drive not the mother board.
