Will repros/knock-offs/counterfeits ever become collectible games?

I would think only if we lost the ability to produce them.

I doubt it. They don't even have the quirk factor that say, chinese/russian pirate carts do.

I find them unique, so at the right price I'll bite. Like a fake Rolex, for some reason I like 'em.

Collectible, sure, many repros already are that, but valuable - not really. They can pretty much always be reproduced for the cost of time and a donor cart, so there value, depending on the platfrom is pretty set at low end $25 (MEGA DRIVE)---> $65 (SNES w/xtra chips like SF2).

I know some repro makers number their carts 1-10, or 1-100, but to me...that's sorta silly and not collectible, though i'm sure it is to some. When someone else can come along and make the same repro, it isn't truly an LE or anything.

Some are and some aren't.

No one wants crappy Chinese GBA bootlegs.

On the other hand, there's a decent market for fan translations like this. Hell, if I couldn't read Japanese I'd already have a sizable collection of 'em.

Somewhat related - but lately I've seen a lot of repro RPGs sold (successfully!) for $150+ on ebay with sellers claiming they are authentic North American versions. There is no NA version of Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Terranigma, etc!

I guess bootleg Earthbound carts are a thing now too.

Always open carts and examine the circuit board as soon as they arrive. Sellers who are flipping games need to do the same before they unwittingly sell a boot.
I actually bought a Repro/Bootleg of Terranigma off Ebay playable on NTSC SNES, the seller didn't make note of it being a repro but I knew beforehand.

Oddly enough Ebay closed down his listing right after I bought it and advised me to take a refund. I still completed the transaction with him anyway since it was already paid for and finally got to play through the game on my console so I was happy.
