Super Famicom / Super Nintendo Bootlegs & Conversions

Post by mjmjr25 »

This is an informational thread about the growing number of UNIDENTIFIED repros / conversions / bootlegs that have been showing up on ebay / amazon and also the forums.

To note, my opinion is that many showing up on the forums are from sellers who unwittingly bought boots.

Regardless of your opinion on repros / conversions / boots, I think we would all agree that to not clearly identify it as such is wrong.

As I am rounding out my personal Super Famicom collection, just in the past 6 months alone, the number of conversions showing up is very disconcerting.

Here is an example, using the game "Iron Commando":

Quick giveaways (if you are actively looking for them). Some discoloration of label, the writing isn't under the logo or under the game title (harder to scan/replicate w/o blurring).

Here is the original listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Iron-Commando-S ... 3380e3fa64
Nowhere does it let the buyer know it is a bootleg. I've seen this particular seller now sell this game a few times and some poor buyer is none the wiser. I've reported the item as well, but no action yet, apparently.

It is clearly listed as custom-made, which is a good thing. I think my only concern with this is that: Why are we making an english version of a game with no text? Why are we selling it for the same price as the SFC version? Again, those are sidebars though.

This is happening with all the $100+ titles:
Deae Tonosama Appare Ichiban
Gourmet Sentai
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (Ryukenden Tomoe)
Undercover Cops
Magical Pop'n

Please be careful and perhaps use this thread to alert other members of your ancillary findings.

Interesting.

Somewhat related - but lately I've seen a lot of repro RPGs sold (successfully!) for $150+ on ebay with sellers claiming they are authentic North American versions. There is no NA version of Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Terranigma, etc!

I guess bootleg Earthbound carts are a thing now too.

Always open carts and examine the circuit board as soon as they arrive. Sellers who are flipping games need to do the same before they unwittingly sell a boot.

Mj, isn't this a problem with Hagane, too? (I thought we talked about that game once..)

You actually shouldn't consider purchasing a game like Earthbound w/o seeing the board first.

Bootleg EB carts are definitely a thing, as is Hagane. As others like Wild Guns and Metal Warriors continue to climb in value, I imagine those are just around the corner.

I suggest requesting PCB pics of high end SNES / MVS carts on the forums. On ebay and amazon is a bit tougher, but maybe the best course of action is maybe let a "deal" pass you by in those instances where as a buyer, we want more information, and knowing that while waiting for that information the item may sell.

EDIT: Yeah, you got in just before me. Hagane is the trendy one right now. Be very careful, a year ago there was only 1 or 2 available per week, including buy now. Lately there have been 10 or so.

I agree - but does anyone actually have luck asking sellers to send a photo of the board? I can see a shop owner being accommodating, but do ebay sellers actually take people up on these requests? I can foresee many "I don't own that type of screwdriver..." comments.

Searching for NES and SNES boxes had been really annoying lately with all the repro ones and customs that are on there now. Heck even the printed covers in UGCs are getting ridiculous, but at least those are usually labeled properly. It's nice to house those if you have them and I love that I have a 'complete' Recca repro. But I hate wading through all the fake stuff to fine real ones.

At least this seller was honest about their $100+ upcharge on this repro:

Bootlegs have been making buying GBA games online a huge pain in the ass for years, it's a huge shame that we're having to worry about SNES bootlegs now.

The guys at TCP have tried several times to get people to quit listing that stuff, but people don't listen.

Crappy-looking ESRB labels like that one on Hagane are an instant sign of a repro.

Yes, you'll probably have issues with people not able (or willing) to open a cart.

It'll probably be in your best interest to be patient and buy from a reputable forum member who can send you pics.

edit: I thought I'd mention that I've seen a lot of low-to-no-feedback accounts on ebay pop up selling rare/desirable carts. Be careful around those.
