Besides the PS2 and oXbox, are there any consoles that have an optical audio out with no option for HDMI?
I am looking into an optical audio switcher since most receivers only have one optical audio input. I am just curious how many optical inputs I could potentially need. Thanks!

Re: Consoles with Optical Audio Output
Depends on the setup. I have a situation where I have like four optic sources, and only two optic inputs. (Most Yamaha stuff has more than one). So there's, consoles, cable/satellite, PC, etc.
I have a optic splitter ... and the way it works is it just has four very small lines on one end and two go to another female end and the other two go to the other female end ... and it SHOULD work as a combiner as well (there's no gadgetry inside it) but ... the openings don't quite line up, so getting audio out of anywhere on it doesn't seem to work ... however you might have better luck.
As far as I know, the only consoles that came with TOSLINK connection optic audio at all were, PS2, PS3, Xbox, and 360. Though, some older consoles can be easily modded to output it.

Those were the only consoles that I could come with as well but I don't need to be concerned about PS3 and Xbox360 since I'll be using HDMI on those. I'm also not going to worry about modding older consoles for optical out since they will only be outputting Dolby Pro Logic II at best which can be transmitted by composite cable.
I've heard that splitters can be hit or miss when it comes to combining signals so I am still probably going to go with a switch. I found one that is pricey but automatically selects the active signal. http://www.cs1.net/products/audio_authority/1177A.htm I will likely just save up for that.
Thanks for the reply!

I just checked my pioneer laser active with sega pac and it does have an optical out. So if you plan on getting a cd/laserdisc/sega combo system be sure to get one with optical out.
