My favorite titles for the gameboy:
Zelda - Link's Awakening
Probotector (Contra I guess)
Gargoyle's Quest
R-Type I & II (either separate or together in R-Type DX)
Solar Striker
Castlevania II
Bomberman Quest (gbc)
Maybe there are a few titles in my list you might enjoy.

Darkwing Duck?
Battletoads?
The Wario games for sure, and the Zeldas (not just Link's awakening, have a look at the 2 Oracle games).
My friend that had the old Gameboy had Darkwing and Toads and the games were at least decent or even good.
Ivo.

If you're looking for classic RPGs, Dragon Warrior I + II and especially Dragon Warrior III will keep you busy for a LONG while.
Mega Man I-V come highly recommended; I-IV play out as sort of an "alternate universe" of their NES counterparts, while V breaks tradition big time.
If you're a hopeless Mega Man junkie, you might consider Mega Man Xtreme and Mega Man Xtreme 2, but only if you REALLY need your Mega Man X fix.
The Game & Watch Gallery games are interesting diversions, but they're essentially collections of minigames with some unlockable stuff, so they might not keep you busy for as long as you'd like. (Or perhaps they'd keep you busy for TOO long!)
Nemesis is a solid space shoot-em-up based on the Gradius series, but it's rather short.
If you're looking for an even older space shoot-em-up, there's always the remake of Yar's Revenge, which you'll either spend 5 minutes on or will get addicted to, just like Game & Watch.
If you're into puzzle games, Qix is a neat little game that, once again, you'll either play for 5 minutes or will allow it to become your new obsession.

I still have Darkwing Duck, and either I just suck or the game is really hard. It looks like a stylish, decent platformer, but when I played it a while ago, I did not manage to beat any of the first levels.Ivo wrote:Darkwing Duck?

I also had Toads, but sadly, I sold it. Maybe I'll find it at the flea market next time, I think it is also a good title for the old gameboy.

This is great! I'm a huge Megaman fan but avoided the GB games seeing them just as cut down versions of the NES games, am I wrong to think that?
I'll be playing all the games you've listed so far (except the RPGs :p).
I'd love to hear of some obscure JPN or completely missed gems if you know of any?

An RPG that hasn't been mentioned yet is Lufia: The Legend Returns for GBC. A really great RPG with an interesting formation system. Plus, it's the classic Lufia system.

Well, 4ppleseed, yes and no. Long story short (Mega Man V notwithstanding), the Mega Man games for Game Boy take four bosses from one Mega Man game, four bosses from another Mega Man game, change around their stage layouts and often the enemies found there, add in totally different Dr. Wily stages with all-new bosses.
So, although the boss weapons, robot masters, and many of the stage enemies and hazards (conveyor belts, spike pits, etc.) are identical or similar to the ones found on the NES, there's enough new material to warrant playing through.
Basically, the later on in the series you get, the more unique the game is. The first one is a cop-out rehash of MM1 and a little bit of MM2; the second is a passable rehash of MM2 and MM3; the third is a good blend of things from MM3 and MM4; the fourth is an excellent game that borrows from MM4 and MM5; and the fifth, as I mentioned, is very original.
As for the Xtreme games avoid them unless you're a true completionist. The first one is really just a trimmed-down Mega Man X/MMX2 and doesn't offer enough new stuff to warrant playing unless you NEED your Mega Man X fix. Xtreme 2 actually makes more of an attempt at telling a story and has a notable amount of differences, but it's still mostly a rehash of MMX1-3.
