add another 30k to that, you can't call it an AES collection without AF3

Did you see teh drama over the weekend, at this point almost every buyer has come out to say they believe the boards are not legit. Not sure what a boot of AF3 is worth, but i'd guess its not even 4 digits. http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthrea ... -(-REPORT)

Oh my goodness, how did I miss that thread? Gonna have to break out the popcorn.

Anyway, my two cents on collecting AES. It sounds like you have an idea already of what you want to buy as well as the cost of acquiring those carts, so you're going in pretty well-informed already.

If any of those carts on your acquisition list are over the $300 mark though, I'd have to give serious thought to buying those. Even if you have a pretty good sense that the cart isn't a conversion, it might be difficult at a future point in time to sell the cart unless you can provide very good proof that it's the real deal.

I've thought about switching to MVS before, and I understand what you mean about how they don't feel as "legitimate." End of the day though, you're paying very high premiums for a couple pieces of paper and a different pin layout.

I dunno..... The prices are insane. There's a reason why I've had an AES for three years but only own three carts.

I plan to maybe buy 5 more Japanese carts and then call it good. The AES is region free of course, but the NA games are much more rare/collectible. Once I have the capability to play MVS games (with a CMVS or converter or whatever) I doubt I'll have much use for AES stuff.

It's definitely more of a "collectible" console more than a gaming console. Nearly every game is also available for less on the MVS, NGPC, emulated on the NGX, or on a compilation. People buy AES games because they're rare, collectible, and look damn cool.

[quote="Ghegs"]AES is for insane people with way too much money in their hands. I'm pretty sure those people don't even play the games, for fear of scratching the case and contacts.

Thats not true i am not insane and i was poor before i bought foxhound his aes
and numerous games. We bought the games for playing not to set on the shelf
and look pretty. As for mjmjr i am gonna tell you the same thing you told me and
fox go for it since it is a good investment for the future.

Of course they are legit. They are official SNK products from start to finish. But like dedalusdedalus pointed out, there are AES carts out there that are actually MVS carts converted into AES by people who can and will take advantage of the collector mentality. So you actually have to watch out for non-legit products when going into AES. Of course there are bootleg MVS carts as well, but those are easier to spot and they don't go for $1k a pop.

If you have to start explaining your games purchases as "investments" and how you can re-sell them later on, you're doing it wrong.

This part of the Neo market is just too much hassle to deal with. Too many bootlegs, conversions, and "Freak'd" out inventory out there and still continues from the looks of it with this AF3 fiasco. This why I stick to strictly collecting for the Neo Pocket and Color.
You collect for MVS already, correct? At the end of the day you are usually just paying top dollar for a case insert and manual on the AES front. But at least you seem to be aware of that.
If you are REALLY considering collecting for AES, I suggest you stick to soley collecting for JPN AES.

Whatever choice you do make though... best of luck to ya.

Let's also not forget that the price of the console itself is nothing to sneeze at.

Japanese consoles (region-free) are cheaper, but all games will play with Japanese text - even the American ones.

I was referring to neo miniboxes / shockboxes / southtown artwork. They look great, etc - but not official SNK.
