I'm really fond of Jo-Jo's Bizarre Adventure. I'm not sure if it got a stateside release, but it's an awesome 2D fighter you just don't hear much people talking about.

This game is so strange, it also has the first gay person in a fighting game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO1jLrv5V1o

I'm pretty sure a couple of Street Fighter characters are gay (I think Eagle from SF1 and maybe Zangeif), though that might've just been a rumor or retcon or fanon or something.

...is that Old Snake in the top right corner?

I really like the 4 players mode in Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen

EDIT: Damn. I didn't notice it was mentioned in Racketboy's article because I was searching for "Yuu Yuu" instead of "Yu Yu".

I believe Poison from Final Fight was The first "confirmed" gay/tranny character in gaming, If you consider non- human characters in the mix then I'd have to go with Birdo from SMB2

Poison was always female, they just made her a tranny when it came to the states because hitting a woman is taboo.

Unless her name is "Chun Li", in which case you can safely punch her right in the face...

Nintendo's censorship policies in the 90s were so weird...

Yeah I don't get it either. Perhaps it was because Chun Li was (gloriously) muscular?

I'm not sure it was a Nintendo thing, as I'm pretty sure Double Dragon had female enemies you could beat up...

Double dragon on the master system, starts off with your girlfriend, getting gut checked and hualed off on some dudes shoulder.
Beating women in beat-em-ups is just a part of equality.
