Sega Saturn is actually my favorite system of all time.
Whenever I talk about it with people in the real world they look at me as if I'm speaking to them about esoteric concepts conceived in another plane of existence.

But yeah, you can blame many things for it's failure, such as SoA's marketing team that were targeting the criminally insane demographic.

The Sega Saturn is probably my favorite console of all time, but yet none of my friends had ever heard of one prior to seeing me buy a few games for it from a local retro games store. This shocked me so much that I started asking around my school and a few online communities, and I simply can't believe the number of people that have either never heard of it or dismiss it as a bad console simply because it's lesser known!

I am curious as to why this 2D powerhouse has faded into obscurity among modern gamers who practically worship the N64 and PSX (aside from the obvious "total commercial failure" argument, of course).

I don't know if I can say if the Saturn is my favorite console of all time, but I love the hell out of mine. When I decided to slim down my collecting due to space/clutter reasons, the one non-current gen console that I kept was my Saturn.

I mainly enjoy it due to the fact that I can indulge my inner video game hipster and play some really great games that are "obscure" to the average gamer. If I'm looking for something new and different to play I can usually hop on ebay and track down some very original if not good imports. I've also got tons of sentimental value for the system, since I picked mine up in high school shortly after it's death in the US, but when the import scene was still going strong. My otaku friends and I loved tracking down anime-based import games, however awful, and playing the superior versions of Capcom and SNK fighters.

It is an age thing. I'm 29. The Saturn is my favorite console. When talking to other gamers of my age, they all know about it and, if they haven't really experienced the system, they still respect it and know why it is considered a good system.

Yes, the system failed financially, but you can not honestly say the system has nothing good about it.

Young people don't know what it is, because, in all honesty, their first game system usually started around PS2 or N64 and, at that age, wasn't aware of console wars and the business of video game systems.

Don't worry. When your peers grow up and, if they have a love for videogames, will start to understand what the Saturn is.
