I really don't get the reasoning. Since when is nostalgia a factor in what you should or shouldn't buy?

Just my opinion my friend, and I knew it wouldn't be popular :)

If you don't have nostalgia and are just playing it because its a great game, why do you care what you play it on?

All around, I feel that playing games on their original hardware is a better experience than playing them in an emulator. Using the original controller, fiddling with the actual media (those TurboGrafx cards are insanely cool, seriously), and getting a bit of a sense of what it was like to play these games when they were new (assuming you didn't play them back then). Playing an Atari 2600 isn't really the same if you aren't messing with the switches on the console itself for example.

That, and as I mentioned earlier, most emulators aren't 100 percent accurate. Many are close enough to be more than adequate and playable, but it's still not exact. The further along you go, the worse it is. Try emulating Saturn, for example.

I just feel like understandable dialog adds another layer to the character, and I vividly recall characters that I have heard speak in a language I understand, whereas I mostly recall the looks/abilities of a character that I have only heard speak japanese/not speak at all.

I just wanted you three to know that I love you. You're awesome, you have good taste, and I love you.

Talking to a buddy at work I realized I should clarify. I'm not against people buying some old system and a couple games because it's cool to see what these old systems were like. I get that. I just think it's weird for somebody to go out and try to amass a complete TG16 collection (just as an example) when they never played it "back in the day" or weren't even alive. If you just want to experience the system, that's one thing, but if you want to "collect" key games for it, that's where I think nostalgia factors in as being important.

I also agree with your point of where they're not playable on an emulator. As I said, I think there are exceptions. If you can't get the game on an emulator, what choice is there if you want to play it?

Have you tried replacing the 72 pin connector? That's all mine needed to get it working again. Failing that, you could always just get a clone system and play on that. Personally, I've considered picking up Retro Bit's NES clone so I can just leave the flash cart in the real system and not risk the pin connector wearing out again.

I have two actually. Neither of them fixed them. I think I'm just going to get a top loader with a composite mod and call it a day.

How do you feel about collecting it from a historical point of view? For instance, say I never owned an NES back in the day(to clarify, I did), but I'm interested in being able to use it and its various games to be able to show to others what the console was like, and to further an appreciation for gameplay, game genres, and the growth, development, and evolution of those things?

Gawd.

DECADE'S MAGENTA GODDAMMIT!

-Super Mario 64 sucks
-I always listen to music when playing handhelds, never the game
-I don't get the point in paying full price for shmups or light gun games
-I don't find new games that much easier than old games
-Bushido Blade sucks
-Contra really isn't that hard
-Sin and Punishment 1 is better than S&P2
-Slender isn't really all that scary
-Neither is RE4
I hate chiptunes

I'd say it goes quite a bit further than just wanting to see what it was like or play one or two games.

I'm sure anybody who wants to amass a complete TG16 collection that didn't own or play one back in its heyday has their reasons for wanting to do so. Maybe they feel some other sort of strong connection with the console?

Or someone like me who really wanted certain game systems as a kid, but never got one and now that I have them, I am now collecting as much as I can for the system?

So someone that appreciated art should only be able to buy posters of paintings or cheap knockoffs of vases? Car enthusiasts should only drive replicas of vehicles their family owned or were made after they got their license? So when all of us that grew up with cart consoles die nobody should own them anymore?

It's your opinion and you are entitled to it. I just think the logic is a little silly and becomes more so when applied to other things. :)
