Yeah, it's kinda weird. All my North American SNES carts that have them only have the one. The only time I've seen a cart have two is Star Ocean (Super Famicom) and I've always wondered if all SFC carts have two.
Those clips aren't even super imperative. It's just an extra ground.

Then if that doesn't work, take it apart and inspect the inside for condition?
(I do know how to solder. Girl power!)
I'd recommend taking it apart to clean it. When you open the cart up, it makes cleaning MUCH easier. It also allows you to do a much better job at cleaning too.
Are there any tricks to taking it apart to keep from breaking it further?
My boyfriend has a new computer fixing tool thing, which appears to have the hexagonal type head I may need, but beyond that I'm not sure what all else to expect upon opening it!
Is there something (besides contacts) I should look to clean on the inside?
Just the bit is needed to get it open, then you just lift on the bottom edge. SNES carts don't have tricky snaps like say Game Gear ones. Pretty much you want to clean the pins once you can see them better, maybe make sure water hasn't gotten in and corroded stuff horribly and maybe check that the capacitor looks ok.
Apparently the boyfriend didn't have the right tool! So I ordered it up, may be posting back here in a week or so when I get it! I need to change the battery out in my Super Mario All-Stars anyway, so it should be worth the 13 I paid. Plus, maybe with the 4.5mm bit I'll take apart my entire system, clean it, and make it like new!
this should work to fix it, flux the cap and replace it. and clean the connections at the bottom of the cart with a white vinyl eraser. You could clean the connections first with that if that doesn't work meter the cap or just replace it. Also check all the resistors if they are open then you might have some of the ics over or under powered.
seem to be getting the habit of bumping old threads.
but interestingly i noticed some having issues with yoshi's island.
just today when i decided to play it, suddenly not working. it was working maybe a month ago. kept it in storage. not gathering dust. never bumped or crashed. and now suddenly not working (my other carts are ok) so weird. the contacts are still clean.
i opened it up and everything was still solidly in place. i really see no problems.
what i notice is when i turn on the SFC, i briefly see the "nintendo presents" then everything goes black forever. my copy is japan version btw. i doubt there's anything else i can do with it actually. but just trying my luck here. thoughts?
Clean the console's cart slot. Specifically, the outer 8 pins on each side. The main center portion of the cart slot is constantly being "cleaned" with friction every time you insert/eject a cart. But, few carts have the outer pins, so they're not being used as often. They probably just need to be cleaned and you'll be good to go.
thanks ziggy ill try that. although i actually thought already something along the lines of "something must have happened to games with special chips", but i already tried others like starfox, rockman x3 and kirby super deluxe and they all work fine. nevertheless you gave me a thought and ill just clean the extra contacts of both sfc and yoshi cart
well i tried. cleaned the console contacts and even the cart just to be sure. but still i just get a "nintendo presents" and black screen. since all my other carts even with special chips still work, im going to have to chalk this one to broken cart. as to why, wouldnt have a clue as it just happened.
