NES red light. Will it ever burn out

Post by brainerdrainer »

I was just thinking about it the other day. How long do you think the little red light on the NES will last? Light bulbs burn out right? So eventually the red light might too?

It is a low power LED light. It will probably last decades upon decades.

It will outlive the connector.

I've had the same NES that my parents bought me in 1985. When that red light fades out, so will I.

Unless you feed them to much power, LEDs don't burn out. They do however get dimmer with use.

That or any of the poetic answers above.

Yes, LEDs will eventually fail over time and use. IIRC most LEDs are rated for 50,000+ hours of use before failure, so realistically the LED on a console would probably be the last part to fail.

Even if it ever does burn out (or you simply want to change the color) it's extremely easy to desolder and replace LEDs, and the NES one is no exception. Mine has a green LED, because red LEDs make me think of problems (I blame the RROD)
