Yeah I don't get this for games, I do for movies, there it makes sense to me. With voice acting for games, all of the acting and inflection and everything comes from voice. With movies, acting is coming from body language and more from the actor and if you have dub there is a disconnect. I just don't see that for games.

For me it's simply a desire to experience something in its most original form. A dubbed movie or game isn't the true vision or originally intended experience. I don't like the idea of that.

In regard to games specifically though wanting to avoid dubs is mainly due to the fact that 9 times out of 10 the original voice cast is better than the English dub. Voice actors in Japan are very serious about it, whereas worrying about an English dub is typically an after-thought and as a result you usually get voice acting that is basically someone reading emotionless lines on the spot. It's not as bad as it was say 10 years ago and there are great English VAs for sure (Catherine in particular comes to mind as having a fantastic dub), but when talking about older games worrying about terrible dubs is a concern for some.

I don't play too many video games with voice acting, but I prefer English dubs in anime as long as the dub is good. If it sucks, I switch to Japanese with subs. Those Hollywood dubs on Miyazaki films are the worst thing ever.

Now see, I'm the opposite. I usually prefer my anime subbed but will watch the Miyazaki films dubbed. With the exception of maybe a character or two, I rarely have a problem with the dub job of the Ghibli movies.

But for the most part, I lean towards subs, unless it's a late night viewing and I feel too tired to read something.

I put hours into FF X maxing out my party and destroying everything in the monster arena. I look forward to doing it again with the new content, and getting trophies for it!



As for FF X-2, I hate a lot of things about that game, but as a big FF fan, I still enjoyed some aspects of it and and I've heard people say that it has the best extra content of all the International FF expansions.

I think I'd say that dub voice actors are very serious about their work as well. Dubbing something is generally pretty restrictive though (having to match specific timings and lip movements), and I think a lot of bad dubs out there are more of a case of poor direction than poor actors.

Depends on the game too. Stuff like newer Final Fantasy games have resynced lips to go with the English audio.

Not understanding the language definitely helps enjoyment in some ways, me thinks. Because while there are still annoying voices at times, it is harder for me to tell how well they are conveying emotions and such.

Honestly, I think it is often a case of poor casting, mediocre actors, and lack of time. Games like FFXIII, like em or not, most definitely get better quality dubs than games like Hyperdimension Neptunia.

But when all is said and done, I WANT the original audio. Honestly, dub only is what is stopping me from buying Atelier Ayesha. That sort of game just doesn't work with English, IMO. English actors do not have any idea how to portray the 'moe'-factor.

I guess casting would fall under 'direction' too. Shit, sometimes there's flat out no direction outside of "Here, just read these lines. We only need one take." You'd be surprised how terrible even an experienced actor can be if you don't give them any context for what they're supposed to be saying.

I probably should've put "most" in there, as I'm sure there's actors who are just plain really bad at what they do. I suspect they're in the minority though as I imagine most people who make a career out of something like acting will at least be able to churn out a competent performance with some decent directing.

Of course, I've never heard the Shining dubs and I don't know anything about the circumstances surrounding them.
