Also, keep in mind that there are plenty of 2D games on PS1 as well.
If there's anything to get from my previous post, it's that gameplay trumps graphics. Metal Gear and Silent Hill are valuable because of nostalgia and originality; both have been succeeded by improved sequels. The control schemes are archaic and typical of the times; you couldn't possibly introduce a new Silent Hill or Metal Gear game with the exact controls and game mechanics and expect it to be well received.

I would lump those games in with other valuable PS1 RPGs - they remain coveted because of great storytelling and fond memories, and despite everything else.

And, of course, 2D games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Einhänder remain examples of the exceptional nature of 2D gameplay.
I wouldn't say Silent Hill's control scheme was ever particularily responsive or well recieved, and they did use the same control scheme up until the third game.

However regardless of whether a game is new or old, credit is still due where credit is due and this is something that many gamers and critics seem to be blind to.
No single aspect of a game is more important than the other - it is the overall combination and implementation of how every element adds up to the final product that is important, in the same way a harmony is played. I have yet to stumble upon a combination of visual artistic direction and music that created as unsettleing an atmosphere as interesting to explore as the original Silent Hill, even in the sequels.

I treat video games as I would treat film or music, Technicalities can't be allowed to hold something back from reccomendation for a media that is largley subjective as technicalities alone don't usually detract from merit that a piece may hold unless they are so obfuscating that the piece itself is no longer audible (think of poor sound quality ruining a good song).

I agree. I really don't have any problem playing psone games. And I grew up on atari.

Don't get me wrong, i agree that 2d has aged much better, i find the 16-bit generation to be far more beautiful than the 32 bit gen. However, i find that nostalgia and gameplay do come through even on the psone. one of the reasons i chose to keep my saturn and dremacast games were because of the improved visuals.

I'd rather play a dreamcast version than a psone version, however i still play capcom v snk pro tekken 3, ff 7 and 8 on the ps1.

I actually started buying saturn games for more 2d games, and improved visuals, i have found however than the differences thus far aren't very big unless you're using the ram cart. Only game I have that makes the saturn wow me over the psone has been vampire savior.

I've collected over 200 PS1 games.

And I say, bring it on.

PS1 on the HDTV? Without modding you'll want to get the S-Video cable. Because of the nature of the 3D graphics and video compression on the system, you don't really need a high end cable, as it all looks kinda crappy, even on a CRT.

You know, I have been noticing that the PS1 section of my favorite game junk store has been shrinking and shrinking. It's down to just a few shelves now -- it used to be a whole rack on par with the SNES and NES racks. The only thinks smaller at this store are the Dreamcast and Atari 2600 racks. I think as the PS3 gets going in the next few years it will be more popular to collect this stuff. It's always two gens behind -- NES got really popular for collecting as the late 90s and the N64 game in.
