Yeah for sure, I was just bein an ass  Persona still offers some of the SMT feel, with the demon-fusing and weakness-driven battle system. And honestly, I liked Persona 4 more than Nocturne.

Still, I think Nocturne is a good place to start, as the sim thing in Persona, combined with the demon-fusing, and the more dungeon-crawl feel, might not be as welcoming.

See, I think Nocturne isn't the greatest place to start because of the balls-crushing difficulty. And then Matador appears.

Yeah, I can see that turning someone off. I just don't know if noob in this case means, "new to this series but well-versed in the genre" or "new to this style of game all together, and need something easily accessible"

I vivdly recall dying to the Matador 27 times before finally taking him down, and even when I did win, 3 out of 4 characters were KO'd, and the other (My main guy) had 4hp left.

... and I literally danced in the middle of the room.

From there, you can at least plan out elemental defenses and the types of demons you use, so the difficulty is more open to how you approach the game. Thor is a very difficult fight without the right set-up, but is a cakewalk if you are immune to lightning. But the Matador fight is so early in the game that all you can do is keep fighting and hoping that he doesn't decide to kill you.

So, Matador (and Trumpeteer) aside, I actually think the game is pretty managable if you use magatma/demons wisely.

The bonus dungeon that was added with the Maniax release (which we got as the only release in the US) is also pretty nasty if you are trying to do it without a walkthrough.

I actually don't think I ever found that bonus dungeon. :(

What do you mean by this? The PS2 version of Persona 4 is called - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. How is it not an SMT game?

In Japan the game is simply called "Persona", the SMT was added to the western releases, similar to how they tried to sell the Saga and Mana series at first by associating it with Final Fantasy.

Basically, there are two "Megami Tensai" games, which I believe were released as a compilation for the SFC, which were followed by "Shin Megami Tensei" and "Shin Megami Tensei 2", also on the SFC. Nocturne would be the third SMT game, and it is so far the most recent game in the series.

The same goes for Digital Devil Saga, which in Japan lacks the "SMT". Granted, this game does tie in with what happens in the first Megami Tensei games, so it is actually a spinoff of the series, unlike Persona.

Its understandable why they would attach "SMT" to the title though, as the games share a lot as far as Demon fusing and combat goes.

The Persona series is a side series; kind of like Final Fantasy Tactics to Final Fantasy.

Gotcha. Well it seems the spirit of it is still there, I mean when you talk about demons like Matador and Trumpeteer earlier, that's like P4 staples right there.

Persona is actually a spin off of the SM series, which later became a franchise. They still carry the SM subtitle.
