Considering how much money ended up lost by that one, somebody was working out a hell of a grudge on the company dime. But then again, it's Disney. They eat human flesh in that company.

So I watched a film with my girlfriend:

She had never seen it before and doubted my high praise of Eddie Murphy's career in the 1980s. Afterward, she apologized for doubting me and asked to see the rest of the series. I love this movie and I view it as one of Murphy's best during the high point of his film career, though 48 Hours is probably my favorite because of how gritty and willing to push the characters' prejudice to the forefront.

If you have never watched this movie, go do it. Go do it NOW.

Haha, I love Eddie Murphy's laugh in Beverly Hills Cop, so iconic.

That's enough for me to place it on my queue.
Mancini soundtrack and Vincent Price as the villain. How have I not watched this? Oh yeah, my nieces only want to watch princess movies and Dumbo.
We have a weekly "movie" night, and we are just coming off the Tinker Bell quadrilogy...My four-year-daughter (who was wearing her forest fairy dress at the time) was resistant to watching it, but once we got into it a bot, she really, really liked it.

Few films capture the attitude and general feel of an era while it is still current and relevant. BEVERLY HILLS COP manages to still make 1984 seem current and relevant. BHC is so hilarious that it makes me question (again) the MPAA rating. Drugs? Check. Guns? Check. Violence? Check. Vulgar language? Check. But it doesn't glamorize any of it.

I haven't seen the first one in a while (shame on me), but I did just recently watch the second one at a friends house. I'm sure the stripper scene is what warranted it's R rating.

Was Beverly Hills cop released before or after they added the PG-13 rating?

Technically after. However, only four films had received it by the time of Beverly Hills Cop's release, and only three of those had been released. The first film to receive the rating, The Flamingo Kid, was actually held a bit longer for distribution, and didn't actually get released until about two weeks after Beverly Hills Cop came out.

As for Beverly Hills Cop's R rating, I figure it was probably due to the topless dancers in the bar in one scene. Sex is more likely to get you a higher rating than violence.

The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) - This classic Mario Bava film is widely considered the first "giallo" film, and I recommend it to any fan of the genre. The plot is ridiculous; the "jokes" fall flat; the acting is passable at best; and it has nowhere near the level of gore that would later become so prevalent in the genre. Moreover, anyone who has ever seen a "giallo" or "slasher" film will know the identity of the killer almost immediately. (I am sure it would have been quite the reveal in 1963...but it is very predictable by 2013 standards.) That said, the black-and-white cinematography is stunning, and it is often genuinely suspenseful. It is the perfect move for a "dark and stormy night" (which is exactly what we had in Charlotte, NC this evening), and a beautifully restored version of the film is available for streaming on Netflix.
