oXbox component cables
oXbox component cables
odd question, maybe, but is there any discernable difference in quality between the oXbox high definition AV pack from microsoft, and just a generic component cable?

I assume the official microsoft ones will be of higher quality.

FWIW, my Psyclone ones work just fine. Everywhere I looked warned against Monster, for some reason.

The Monster ones work great for me. I got them for a good price, too, since the oXbox was old news by the time I got one. The only potential problem is that the RCA connectors are very tight, which could cause damage to the TV if plugged and unplugged repeatedly.o.pwuaioc wrote:FWIW, my Psyclone ones work just fine. Monster is usually good quality, just vastly overpriced.o.pwuaioc wrote:FWIW, my Psyclone ones work just fine. Everywhere I looked warned against Monster, for some reason.
I think the main difference you get with the official MS AV kits (S-Video or component) is that they both use breakout boxes instead of integrated cables. Both have stereo RCA and optical plugs for audio, and differ in their video output options - S-Video and composite, or component.
Third party cables I've seen are usually integrated, and may or may not include a way to use digital audio.
So while picture quality may not be an issue, audio might be if you were hoping to get Dolby Digital or DTS output.
Though, of course, the breakout box design does make it easier to swap for better/longer/whatever cables if you want to as well. That said, the cables that MS includes are quite nice anyway.
Re: oXbox component cables
THIS, expensive unless you buy them used. The Monster cables are beautiful and maybe a little over kill on shielding; most third party cables work just fine unless really a cheap quality. The one thing I do not like about Monster Cables is how crazy heavy they are, its got to be a strain on the switchbox connectors with the weight of the cables. Even worse, the non component SVideo pins with that heavy shielded cable.isiolia wrote:Monster is usually good quality, just vastly overpriced.o.pwuaioc wrote:FWIW, my Psyclone ones work just fine. Yeah, monster cables are thick!
They do mess up switch boxes. Especially the cheap ones.
Its best just to leave them, and don't pull and repull.
I've messed up my Phillips switch box already.

thanks for the replies, guys! i just picked up a breakout box kit in a CL lot and wondered if i should swap it out with the generic cable i have. i think i'll just leave it as is and get rid of the breakout box.
