Some Working Designs Love

Post by TheRev »

After getting Thunder Force V the other day I broke out my copies of Ray Crisis and Silhouette Mirage too and read the translation notes. Interesting stuff there. They always seemed to go the extra mile for better or worse when localizing retro games.

Then they went under...

Apparently now Gaijin works the successor is reissuing some of the backlog on PSN.

on top of that all the their Saturn releases are rather pricey collectors items now.

I'm a fan of all their stuff I've been able to afford, haha - Magic Knight Rayearth, Lunar 1 & 2, Albert Odyssey, Vay, Cadash, Cosmic Fantasy 2... I don't think I've tried any of their non-RPG titles.

I've been a fan of their releases ever since I 1st saw the Lunar (Sega CD) ads in magazines.
I really liked their translation notes as well. It always added a bit of perspective to the game you just got.

I'm trying to think if there are any games that I don't already have of theirs... I think "Sega Ages" is the only one (not counting the TG-16/Duo games, as I don't have the system).

Now, as to the number of those games that I've actually played...
My backlog is absolutely tragic.
Mostly just played the 2 Lunars and some shooters (which I suck, but like anyways).

I really should tackle some more of my collection, especially Dragon Force.

What are they planning?
I'm glad the PS1 "Arc the Lad" games are available.
...just another lost soul...

Thunder Force V is fantastic I guess they fixed slowdown problems other versions had or at least that's what the notes said.

They even kept Pocket Station support in Ray Crisis. Pretty cool of them.

They were a gamers game company Something that just doesn't exist anymore. I NEVER finish RPGs but I will pick the Lunars up when and If I get the chance.

I had Alundra for a while but I had no idea what I was doing in it and thus, sold it off.

Their games are a bit on the pricey side now, but the overall packaging and presentation is just so nice that you feel like you really get your money's worth anyway.

"for better or worse" is key. But yeah, in either case I'm a big fan. I kind of love that they (well, Victor Ireland anyway) had this intense passion that good, bad or otherwise always shone through in the packaging, translation notes, and so on. I feel like 20/20 vision-wise, a lot of folks like to hate on WD for some of the changes they made (again, for better or worse) but that seems to forget that without them we would have possibly never seen so many of these incredible games that they localized.

Heck, without them we probably wouldn't have the standards of localization that we have today. They pretty much built the market for bringing over niche Japanese titles.

missed you, Apple.

Yeah I agree. Mostly. I mean, you could argue I suppose that localization got more serious sometime after FFVII hit paydirt. But at the same time, I think that Vic Ireland was always a point of reference for how to do it right -- even if he included weird pop culture references or whatever -- that was beside the point. It was the passion. It was the fact that WD cared to localize games far more interestingly than just running the shit through a "all your base" translator.

Depends on the game, UNGODLY Prices for the Saturn games (Then again how many dirt cheap Saturn games are there?) The PS1 and PS2 games don't seem to be that much. I guess Lunar 2 on Sega CD gets expensive.

The Thing is I'm not an RPG gamer, which made up most of WD's games not that I hate RPGs I just never finish them. Some day I'll get Lunar on uh, what should I get lunar on?

I've played almost every version of Lunar -- and they're all great. Get it on anything. SCD, PS1, GBA, PSP. Whatever. It's an amazing game.
