Peanuts are legumes, not nuts. Journalists these days suck balls.

Well clearly he had a nut allergy, as well as an allergy to peanuts. Said he started having problems when he dropped his inhaler in a pile of acorns. Also, clearly, she should have used the expired epi-pen, right?

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
A girl died from an allergic reaction when I was at school. It is certainly tragic, but in the case of this guy, that was just stupid.
Two very dumb decisions led to his death. If you're deathly allergic to something you don't trust anyone saying "I don't think there's X in there" and you don't say "to hell with it".The friend said he didn't taste any hint of peanut.

Kids. Always dropping inhalers in piles of acorns.
My beef isn't all about nuts vs. legumes; it is the terrible and lazy writing, reporting, and presentation about a kid's death. Most online articles seem like someone spent a minute on wikipedia and never fact check.
I'm ranting a bit, but the majority of journalism is al copy and paste. If 9/11 happened today we would be flooded with "Twin Towers Done Blew Up!". Saying "Some shit happened" isn't really a scoop. And I feel sorry for his parents (I could be mistaken but I don't even think they mentioned if he had a Father), but some kid who died from a peanut allergy isn't front page stuff, nor is anything kardashian related.
Even the WSJ prints this nonsense, and it seems like the only place I can get decent journalism is from either PBS or Comedy Central (which both seem to have an agenda).
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Third bad decision: the decision to not give him expired epi-pen. Even if it wasn't going to alone save his life, it likely would have had some effect. Expiration doesn't mean worthless, it means not at full potency. Whoever told her not to use it has blood on their hands.Hobie-wan wrote:A girl died from an allergic reaction when I was at school. My brother is deathly allergic to peanuts. He was just in the hospital again because of it two weeks ago. He pisses me off because he won't carry an epi-pen with him. I don't know how to get him to believe that he needs to care for his own life and it's frustrating. He's so damn cavalier about it. He's been in denial forever. He also continues to smoke even after having a stroke in his 20s that led to doctors telling him couldn't take risks like smoking anymore. I love my brother and he is usually very intelligent, but he just won't listen to reason when it comes to his health. He gives into convenience and impulse and dismisses everyone who tells him to act differently.

Is there an epi-pen you can carry on your person? Mine says to keep it refrigerated until use.J T wrote:My brother is deathly allergic to peanuts. He was just in the hospital again because of it two weeks ago. .
I feel your frustration buddy. The "You need to cool it" talks have never worked in my favor.
