Am I alone in not liking Fatal Fury for the Genesis? Am I not playing it right?
Admittedly, I only played it a small number of times and not for especially long, but from what I recall... the game felt slow, clumsy and, to be frank, rushed.
I did enjoy Fatal Fury 2 a lot more, but it still wasn't great.
I can enjoy Mark of the Wolves, though.
So, what's the verdict?
Fatal Fury
Re: Fatal Fury
I'm not sure where you may have heard otherwise, but I'm pretty sure it's universally agreed that Fatal Fury is not a very good game
It was instantly made obsolete by its successor (not unlike Street Fighter), and as far as the Genesis version, it's actually a pretty decent port...of a game that's not very good.
Fatal Fury 2 is a much improved game over the original, and again, the Genesis port is fairly competent, but the series wasn't really "special" until...well, Fatal Fury Special, which is the "SFII Turbo" of the series, if you will. I don't believe Special was ever ported to Genesis; I know it exists on Sega CD, SNES (a flawed but enjoyable port) and Game Gear (this port is probably my favorite 8-bit fighter ever. It's really good).
Oh yeah, and Mark of the Wolves totally rules

"Oh, no, not in Utica, no. It's an Albany expression."
Re: Fatal Fury
I figured as much... I just recalled a list of Top 10 Worst Games that the folks at Old-Wizard did, and included Fatal Fury. Strangely enough, most people defended it.
Mark of the Wolves certainly does rule.
I guess that's the only Fatal Fury game worth owning. I don't think an 8-bit fighter would cut it for me.
Just done a little searching. Seems there's a NeoGeo version of Fatal Fury Special. Maybe I'll test it out on MAME later...

Re: Fatal Fury
The Neo Geo Fatal Fury Special was the original. There was an excellent port to the PC Engine Arcade CD format. Hands down the best port of that game anywhere. It's a great game. It doesn't look as shiny now, but neither do many other fighting games that were kick ass at the time.
Re: Fatal Fury
I don't know, I enjoyed the Fatal Fury games on SNES. They might not have been faithful ports, but compared to some of the other stuff on the console...yeah. Fatal Fury Special was easily the best of the first three, though, even featuring Ryo from Art of Fighting as an unlockable character if I remember correctly.
I still haven't gotten to play Mark of the Wolves...I need a Dreamcast.

Re: Fatal Fury
Until then, you could always have a little test on MAME, provided you have a controller. Otherwise... hmm.Ack wrote:I still haven't gotten to play Mark of the Wolves...I need a Dreamcast.
