So here are two questions I've had lately.

Why is doom metal considered "extreme" metal? I've never really understood that. Its derivative of the earliest forms of metal, the first or second fish to leave the ocean of proto-metal. There's no death growls or overly extreme forms of playing, so I don't really get it.

Another, older, more argued question. Is Grunge metal? Sure, its based in punk in many ways, but then again, Sludge has hardcore punk based vocals, but it is still considered metal.

You're thinking only of the "first wave" or "traditional" doom metal, which isn't exactly extreme though I'd hesitate to call it "accessible" to the average music listener.

"Extreme" doom refers to the scenes that emerged in the late 80s/early 90s - death/doom, funeral doom, black/doom ("dark metal"), sludge, etc... Something like this is generally regarded as "extreme" for instance.

Some of it kinda is, some of it kinda isn't.

Yeah, depends on the band really.

I've always understood that some grunge is metal in nature, while some is closer to punk rock, and some is just corporate rock nonsense. It's something that needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

It's the same way that some crust bands are also metal (Amebix, Hellbastard) and others clearly aren't (Aus-Rotten, Antischism).

So guys, a little thing I'm looking for. I'm looking for melodeath or death/doom bands that mix in harsh and clean vocals. Ideally, the cleans would be the main aspect, but this isn't necessarily needed. The harshes would support or emphasize the cleans. Its more of a metalcore thing to do that, but I'm sure someone in melodeath has done it.

The only bands I can think of are the Christian Alvestrom fronted ones.

I know you asked this before, but I think you mentioned something else in your post and we got hung up on that. Wasn't it like, "understandable" harsh vocalists or something?

Anyway, I'm certain that what you're asking for is out there, but I'm mostly drawing a blank right now, as I guess that's kinda a few steps out of my niche. Hmm... maybe try Thorr's Hammer? They might not hit the specific clean/harsh vocal balance you're asking about, but they do mix them (and they have a female vocalist who kicks ass at both!)

There are some pretty obvious examples of this in the prog metal realm, but I'm not sure you want that.

I second the Thorr's Hammer rec. Amazing band. Lacuna Coil also had some decent harsh/clean vocal melodies back in the In a Reverie days. Your mileage will certainly vary with that band though.
