It's an intersting philosophical thought experiment; if we could create a simulation of the universe, what's to say we aren't also a simulation? But completely horrible as a video game plot twist.AppleQueso wrote: What the hell kind of RPG has a twist where it turns out your entire party are all video game characters? Not even M Night Shayamalan could come up with something as crazy as the shit that happens towards the end of that game.
I'd spoiler mark that, but fuck it, I think it's better if people aren't forced to waste like 50 hours of their time.

It's been a long time and I can't really remember it to well but Unlimited Saga for the PS2 keeps flashing in my mind when thinking about bad RPGs.

Re: The worst RPGs
Hey, hey. Till The End Of Time had a terrible plot twist, but other than that it was a really fun game. It had beautiful graphics, awesome music, cool level design (except for the crawler) and a big, diverse world to explore. Not to mention the awesome battle system that other aRPGs just wish they had. The end boss was a proper send-off and definitely made you used the skills you'd been learning for the last 50 hours. Unlike most "great" RPGs, it never stops coming up with new challenges.
I can understand being frustrated by the story. That plot twist isn't even the worst thing! The endings were short and meaningless, failing to do any justice to the characters. Even sadder than that, I was excited to see what was on the other side of that gate. It was the dumbest thing possible. Still, I could never call it one of the worst RPGs ever.

See, thing is is that the battle system kinda drove me nuts too. Your partner AI was pretty terrible, and MP deaths were just a bad idea.

The Matrix did that without making it insanely dumb.MrPopo wrote:It's an intersting philosophical thought experiment; if we could create a simulation of the universe, what's to say we aren't also a simulation? Re: The worst RPGs
I guess I am easily entertained, as I actually quite enjoyed SO:TeoT. I thought that plot twist was pretty cool, even though it was cheesy as hell.
I guess I just liked that the entire game to that point, I felt like I was being held back by these unadvanced civilizations, only to find out that there are others looking down at you the same way you were looking down at the 16-century developing planets. It was an interesting change of perspective.
I also really liked MP deaths. It was mean, but it made you approach things differently, as your tank was still very vulnerable to certain attacks. I wouldn't want it in every game, but it was a nice change from what RPGs generally do. I do agree that the AI was pretty terrible, but it wasn't enough to ruin the experience.
The Synth in that game was pretty in-depth too, at least compared to anything I had played at the time. It took some getting used to, but once you got the hang of it, you could really do some cool stuff, and competing with other inventors was neat.
Plus, this was the only RPG outside of Pokemon I have played where I could take my memory card to my friends house and actually battle my team against his, and this was really welcome in an action-rpg.
The game may have been a bit too ambitious, but I would consider far from the likes of a true "worst rpg". Definitely not a game I would recommend to everyone though.

I enjoyed Till the End of Time too, but it was clearly just fluff. Lots of grinding, and the combat boiled down to mashing one button rhythmically. This is a much bigger flaw than anything they could have done with the story.

Re: The worst RPGs
Not to call you out, but I don't understand how you could have these 2 complaints about a game. How could it be "Just mash a button", and yet still require tons of grinding? Did you attempt this "mash a button" and lose, so you did some grinding until button mashing worked?Hatta wrote:I enjoyed Till the End of Time too, but it was clearly just fluff. I am not a huge RPG player, or really one at all, but my wife is, and she played the crap out of Till the end of Time back in the day. She claims that she had over 100 hours into it. When The last hope came out I bought it for her at launch, and she played it quite a bit and liked it too. The only thing I can say about Till the end of time is that the battle music rocked!

Re: The worst RPGs
As much as I want to get into it, I just cannot get into the Star Ocean series.
I'm beginning to think that everyone that say's it's good is lying.
I was really disappointed with Phantasy Star Universe. But I'm not sure if it's because it was bad or if it was because I was so hungry for PSO2 at the time and it didn't live up to my expectations. I figure it's a bit of both.
Guardian's Crusade. Quest 64.
I hate Kingdom Freaking Hearts. Fight me about it.
