I'm not big on lyrics either. If I want a good story I can read a book or watch a show. For me, music just needs to sound good. Honestly, I don't know what half the artists or bands I'm listening to are singing. Most of the time the lyrics don't mean shit anyway, just artsy, poetic crap that's open to interpretation i.e. it doesn't mean shit.

It's great when a band or artist has vocals you can understand and lyrics you can relate to, but it doesn't mean squat to me if the music doesn't make me want to tap my foot or start head banging.

Exactly, it's death metal with some (/a lot) of melody added in it. At the gates, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, Ensiferum, Gates of Ishtar, In Flames, Kalmah, Wintersun, Dark Tranquillity, that kind of stuff
Dethklok is a good, somewhat mainstream example. Granted, they are not to be taken that seriously, but it's actually some good metal whether you take that whole gimmick seriously or not.

I understand where you're coming from, I have a lot of friends like that.

For me, I'll compare music to a woman. (Misogynistic pig, OMG!!) The music is the body. There's a ton of woman with great bodies, the same as there are a lot of bands with good music. However, the lyrics are the personality of said woman. She can be as beautiful as all get out (body), but if her personality sucks (lyrics), I can only stand her in short bursts. IE, I'd have a one night stand or similar, but I wouldn't date.

I'm just trying to show how I feel about it, probably doing an improper job.

I kinda gave up on metal lyrics a long time ago. Consider the fact that some of the greatest metal bands are European, but sing in English instead of their native tongue. Doesn't always translate well.

I guess I still like playing the field with my music and am not looking for a commitment with any band yet

Body's good enough for me

I'll just have to pick up more doom to get my clean vocal fix, screw it.

Some Draconion. Death/Doom, but I also hear the word Gothic thrown around them a lot. Not sure what "Gothic Metal" is, but oh well.

Most death metal is about as much focused on 'gore' as your average thrash band. Stuff like Cannibal Corpse are a minority actually. Death Metal as a whole runs the same gamut of typical lyrical themes that every other metal genre out there does.

I definitely don't care for the lyrics=personality comparison. Where ever the "personality" in a band comes from, it's not from that.

Also, Obituary comes from a similar musical background that you do. They're all big Willie Nelson fans, for example.

I guess I'm in the minority here, whatever.

EDIT:I found someone who agrees with me!!!

http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2011/02 ... cs-matter/

I'll bring it to this. If the bands themselves believe the lyrics to be unimportant, they should do one of two things: Not put in lyrics, or kind of vocalize over the music without words. Directly taking the voice as an instrument. It also saves the work of writing lyrics... Power metal bands do this somewhat often, with the "OooooOOOOOooooHHHHHhhh" and such. Doom does this too, often in a despairing wail sort of way.

I don't know why you felt the need to dig up an article to defend yourself. Nobody was telling you that you were "wrong" for feeling that lyrics are extremely important. I think most of us were just saying that great lyrics can elevate a band, sure, but crummy ones rarely hurt.

Besides, I think that article is attacking a completely different idea than what I was talking about. I am not bothered if a vocalist smashes words together or slurs things or in some other way doesn't make it terribly clear what they're saying. Enunciation is different from lyrics. Cryptopsy's earlier albums have some rather chilling and very well done lyrics, and the vocalist who wrote them (Lord Worm) delivers them in a completely indecipherable manner.

Who says the lyrics aren't important to the bands? I just said that they aren't too terribly important to me (or well, I should say that I don't mind if the lyrics are awful or indecipherable).

Besides, Obituary did this on their first few albums. John Tardy would just feel that vocals should go somewhere and not have anything written down, so he'd just puke out random syllables.

Damn I didn't even know Suffocation was still around! I'll admit I haven't listened to any of their albums since Pierced from Within. :?
