Am I alone in hating Mortal Kombat?

Post by glynnahab »

I'm no fighting game expert by any means. I do enjoy a competitive match of Street Fighter 2 with lots of shit-talking involved, but that's about as far as I go with the genre.

But I really, REALLY hate this game. (At least the 16 bit series. Haven't played the more recent installations.) To my it was all hype and little else. Someone else's post in some other thread got me thinking about it. (Was it you, Lordofduct, and your insanely long post? ) I never understood why this game was so popular, even back in its heyday.

What are your opinions? Am I the only person who thinks these games blow donkey dick?

I never played those games, but I guess I never will because those strange prerendered graphics kind of alienate me.

Could you explain to me as a non-american foreigner what the expression "blow donkey dick" means?

See Ack? I told you people hate this game. :D

I love it. After the first two, I lost interest because of the canned combos. And then of course the jump to 3D pissed me off completely.

So what do I like?...HUGE sprites, distinctive characters, balanced fighting (mostly), excellent sound, Fatalities, a block button (works great for this type of game), some people call it clunky but I love the pace, it is certainly not "smooth" like Capcom but very deliberate back and forth action, but most of all I have a great deal of FUN playing MK1 and 2.

It seems to me that people who never played it when it originally came out seem to hate it more because it can appear very dated.

What's funny is that if you google "blow donkey dick" the first result is this thread.

Nah~ MK doesn't hold a candle to Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, KOF, Samurai Showdown or many other games.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

mk was okay. i remember liking it a lot when i was younger probably because of the blood/gore/whatever. street fighter is infinitely better and more well designed. and beleive it or not i actually like the more recent 3d mortal kombat games. they werent too bad.

There were things I liked about the 3D games, but ultimately they're just the same back and forth of the 2D ones. If nothing else, they're fun at parties I suppose.

I'm surprised that Fugue didn't immediately say 'digitized'! I know he's a fan of that. Even on the home console the sprites were big and the gameplay intact, so if you enjoyed the arcade titles, it made for some decent ports. Also, if you nab some of the later 2D ones, specifically MK Trilogy, you get a ton of characters to choose from, which is pretty cool. MK Armageddon was kinda like that with a cast of every character to appear in a Mortal Kombat as well as a character creator that was actually kinda decent, but when I play it it still feels like a Mortal Kombat game to me.

I think one of the major reasons it got big was the appeal of playing a game by an American company, actually, with lots of blood and gore. Also what better way to shame an opponent than a fatality after a grueling match?

I don't really see a reason to hate the early Mk games sure they are not perfect but can be fun to play from time to time. But if you really must find a reason to hate mk 1 and 2 play the one button amiga verisons :P

I agree with Arion. I don't particularly like Mortal Kombat, but it is fun from time to time.

Personally, I'd say I prefer the 3D installments.

My first street fighter game was, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, for the playstation. My first Mortal Kombat game was, Mortal Kombat trilogy, for the N64. Love 'em both, but Mortal Kombat definitely got far more play with my friends and I. Anyone with ANY kind of 2D fighting knowledge can pick up a mortal kombat game and do some damage. Its insanely fast, has some cool looking characters, and that zaney guy that pops out screaming, "toasty" (or whatever it is he screams).
Street fighter games certainly have more technical prowess, and strategy behind them. Those exact points that are making you say, "yeah, and thats why Mortal Kombat sucks!", is what can also make you wrong. Sure mortal kombat is all canned combos, that any buttom masher can dish out, but thats what people love about it. Each character has their handful of dastardly moves, and their is an easy layout to get some combos in. Pick any random 3 characters for a 3-on-3 battle, and you'll be able to do some damage to your buddies. Even then, there is enough buffer room so that a seasoned player will annihilate a drunken dude looking to mash on a controller.
As amazing as street fighter is, unless you take the time to figure out the character, and how to handle them, youll be sitting there as Ryu throwing out 'hadokens' and then performing a sho-ryuken when the oppoent gets closer. Not alotta fun when your looking to have a battle with your buddies.

P.S. 3D Mortal Kombat fighters suck
