I'm also interested in seeing more bands with good growling vocals, ala Amon Amarth or Insomnium, seeing as most are near gibberish.

But Amon Amarth's early material is completely indecipherable...

Here's a few vocalists I personally like a ton:

Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower) - Personal number one vocal influence. I just love this guy's delivery.

John Tardy (Obituary) - Not always very understandable (since he literally sings gibberish sometimes) but his vocals are very distinct. I can easily pick him out on anything he sings on.

Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) - Another huge vocal influence. His voice is just classic, and he's pretty decipherable I think.

Piotr Wiwczarek (Vader) - I know a LOT of people who hate this guy's voice, but I love it. Unlike a lot of death metal vocalists, his voice has actually gotten better over the years if you ask me.

I really like Ross Dolan (Immolation) too, but I know you're uncomfortable with explicitly anti-religious bands and Immolation is about as anti-religious as it gets...

Well, maybe its just a personal thing. I've always found that Johann's vocals were easy for me to understand, even the early stuff.

Really? Even like, Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds early?

I've never really given a hoot if a vocalist is particularly understandable anyway. Lyrics in metal just doesn't interest me at all. I love good vocals, but I really don't care if I can understand what they're saying or not. The voice is just another insturment to me I guess. ... actually that's probably why I'm such a god awful lyricist lol.

Besides, most of the more interesting sounding death metal vocalists, guys like Lord Worm or even Chris Reifert, are almost completely indecipherable anyway.

also just wanted to say thanks to whoever initially posted that link to that Havok record, that is some serious top-notch thrash.

i get the feeling that a LOT of people don't listen to "that much" thrash. it's pretty much the only metal i really get down on most of the time.

That's cool, I'm not too surprised honestly. The band has a pretty huge cult following, and I imagine most people immediately jumped on the chance to catch them in a rare US appearance.

Most of the time I feel like I'm the only one in here who cares about any of the bands I talk about. I kinda get what you mean.

Me neither. Even with bands that do have clean vocals that I like (Iron Maiden, Manowar, DragonForce, Freedom Call and Rhapsody are my Top 5 in that category), it doesn't really matter to me what they sing about aslong as it sounds good and catchy. Except maybe Manowar. I guess that's the reason why I can't stand most music that isn't metal or electronic, it's all about lyrics and singing and I find most pop and rock music to be faggy because of that fact

Melodeath is short for Melodic Death Metal. Clean vocals aren't that uncommon, usually mixed in with growls and such.

I personally care about lyrics. I guess it comes from my country/bluegrass background, but lyrics and what they say are important to me. I'm not really sure. I just prefer the lyrics to be something I can go with, or tell some kind of story.

I guess that's why I'm not a fan of normal death metal. Too much focus on gore and such. As much as I like that, I don't need music for it. I get my gore fix from movies, videogames, books and such. Not in my music though.

Exactly, it's death metal with some (/a lot) of melody added in it. At the gates, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, Ensiferum, Gates of Ishtar, In Flames, Kalmah, Wintersun, Dark Tranquillity, that kind of stuff (before many of those bands tried to emulate Metallica and changed their sound that is). Growling vocals, that are clearly distinct when compared to Grindcore, Black Metal and Death Metal growls, is an essential part of the Gothenburg/scandinavian sound.

I guess I didn't come through clearly enough. I want mixed growling/clean, or growling that can actually be understood. I guess I made it sound like I was looking for pure clean, which is not what I mean. Almost all of those you listed I like, seeing as they are understandable.
