Better lard then some sort of nasty hydrogenated vegetable oil.

My Mother makes her pie crusts with lard, and damn if they aren't the best.

Oh man, I might have to try that out. Another thing that is awesome fried in animal fat is french fries in tallow ... yum.

My Grandmother (Father's side, moved to US from Germany in the 1920's) used to cook fried chicken in a huge cast-iron skillet full of lard. It was heaven in your mouth. The crazy thing is, lard (cooked properly) doesn't taste oily.

When in the mood for fried chicken, I usually bake Amish "fried" chicken which is a fail safe recipe, but there is no true substitute for homemade chicken fried in lard.

You mean the hardcore punk/industrial band founded in 1988 as a side project by Jello Biafra (vocals), Al Jourgensen (guitar), Paul Barker (bass), and Jeff Ward (drums). Right?...

Last night's meal was a hit with everyone.

I simmered bockwurst in apple cider, with sliced apples and onion. Roasted some garlic, made roasted garlic mashed potatoes, also made a Bavarian style sauerkraut and a spinach side salad. All that was missing was decent rye bread.

edit* Craving a fancy pants burger for dinner tonight, but not sure what type of burger to make. One burger I wish I liked is one topped with bacon, fried onions, smoked cheddar, jalapenos, and bbq sauce. Sounds so good, but the taste of the ground beef is completely lost.

Hmm. Maybe smoked Gouda and arugula? Baby Swiss and porcini mushrooms? Looking for ideas here guys.

The real question is: Starbucks, Peet's, or independent? And if the latter, then where do you go for coffee? I always ended up at Starbucks because I lived off of Ocean near Junipero Serra, so West Portal was the closest area for me.
