A quick test with Pokémon Diamond and Platinum side by side showed that the smaller resolution did look better side by side than the full screen, but still wasnt quite as crisp and bright as the DSi. Still, on a 3DS XL it would be an OK alternative. The original ratio is a bit too small on an original 3DS imo.
Yea. I tried playing original res for Radiant Historia when I had an original 3DS. Way too small. Have not tried playing any regular DS games on my 3DS XL.
I imagine the 3DS XL running DS games at the original res is comparable to the size of a DS/DS Lite/DSi screen. But clearly it'll be smaller than the DSi XL.

No one has any issues with the 3DS XL for 3DS games, we just think it's a bad option for original DS games.
I don't think it is a bad option. Well, haven't tried it for that YET, but it should be solid. Better than the regular 3DS that is way too small in native resolution mode.
Ds games look great to me, but maybe thats because I upgraded from an original ds? You can play the ds games in their original resolution by holding start and select when you boot up a DS game but the screen will be much smaller, on the 3ds xl the size od the native resolution is the same size as a normal ds. Personally I think it looks great the way it is, playing ds games in its native resolution on an original 3ds however is almost unplayable due to how small it is.

Well ladies and gent's, this man is the winner. I won't be doing exactly that, but very close. I'll buy a 3DS and a GBA SP (The back-lit version) and if it turns out that DS games really do look noticeably stretched out and discolored then I'll invest in getting a DSi (Most likely an XL version). Though I honestly hope it isn't that bad, lol.
Also, as to getting a 3DS XL or regular I'm 100% certain I want the XL for that. Not only should it be much better for playing DS games for all the reasons you all pointed out but I found out today that the XL has a matte finish and that sealed the deal for me.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

The matte looks great. Don't let pictures fool you either. When looking at pictures online I thought it looked kinda crummy. In person it is fantastic. Much better than the regular 3DS's that have 3 or 4 different shades of a given color on them. I hate that.
Interesting fact. If you play DS games on a 3DSXL in native resolution I believe the viewable screen area is roughly the same size as the regular DSi XL.
Also, I have no issues with blurring on my 3DS XL when it comes to 3DS games. Some games have post-processing AA and look a bit blurred around the edges on either system though.
