Thanks, Opa. I think that proves my point. The rarity guide at digitpress.com lists Chrono Trigger as a 3, which is "not so common in the wild, but fairly common on the internet". And yet, the lowest listed price for a loose cart is $85 BIN. High demand or not, if that's not gouging, I don't know what is.
...and sealed games have what to do with that? All you've demonstrated is that, yes, there has been a huge price spike in general over the past year or so.

The sealed collector market is an entirely different niche than what most of us do. They are not interested in open or loose games, and people who collect CIB or carts aren't interested in the premiums that come with buying games sealed. Someone buying a sealed copy of Chrono Trigger on ebay has zero bearing on your ability to get a loose copy.

This crap against sealed collectors basically amounts to "I don't like these guys because they spend more money than me and enjoy the hobby in a different way than I do."

I've had sealed collectors tell me that I'm doing it wrong because I collect for play rather than display, and they were kind of arrogent about it, so yeah, that tends to color my perception of them. Sorry.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

If they're saying stuff like that to you, they're in the wrong and doing the exact same thing I was complaining about. Assholes are assholes.

Just saying there's nothing wrong with the hobby itself or people participating in it.

The rarity guide doesn't mean much if a game was popular. Ever heard of supply and demand. Just look at things like Earthbound (something that was never sealed), it's extremely popular right now and commands a high price, but is by no means rare. I remember 10 years ago I paid $20 for my copy.

And if you go buy rarity to judge the price of a game, then the eBay prices of sealed games are probably reasonable, considering hardly any exist.

And on the topic of sealed games being unfair to people who play them, I don't get what twisted logic a person would have to use to think this. I'm sure for retro games, sealed copies are less than 0.01% of a games population. Are you telling me you would go out of your way to pay extra for that 1 in 10,000 copies of a game just to open and play it. It wouldn't make financial sense, or any kind of sense at all. Unless a vast majority of games were sealed and encapsulated there is no way it could be unfair.

There's unfathomably rare games that'd make the shiftiest Neo Geo zealots do a double take, if only they gave a **** about it.

Go try to find the box of PAL Game Boy version Hammerin' Harry for sale.
