I found a PSX DVR for cheap, questions inside

Post by Toktogul »

So I found a few PSX DVR in working condition for around 45$-95$.

I have a few questions before making the leap for it.

I live in Japan and I have a Cable to receive cable tv signal.

I have no clue how digital, analogic, or whatever. I don't pay for cable, so I have few channels, but I would like to use the PSX DVR to record One Piece every week, cause i'm too lazy to wake up at 9 am on Sunday ;)

How does it work? I know there is a 160gb hhd drive inside, so i guess it records and keep the file inside, then I can burn a DVD. Is that correct?

Would it be possible to plug another game console to it with the AV cable, and capture video of me playing other consoles?

Is there anything I should know about the PSX? I tried to find information online, but there isn't much about it unfurtunately.

thank you

do you mean on of these? Image
these are pretty rare if you can get one under a $100 do it. But as for using it as a DVR, why not just download the one piece episode you want off of the internet?

Yes that is the PsX i am talking about. its sexy and very cheap here.

In Japan there is a new strict law in downloading, so as a governement worker, i could risk to loose my job and have a huge bill by doing so. the dvd for one piece are off the hook here 90$ for used dvd box for one season... wtf) and i need a 3rd ps2 anyway.

this is the cheapest way to catch up on the tv show without being illegal

Specs say it has RF, S-Video, and Composite inputs and a VHF and CATV tuner ... meaning, you can decode TV signals as well as record them the same way you would on a VCR.

I would imagine it supports generic recording from source ... so if you hook something up to RF, S-Video, or Composite, it'd probably be able to record it. It has built in video editing ability so, it would make sense.

This sounds like a killer deal, by the way.

It can transfer videos to PSP through USB ... so chances are you can transfer to a computer through USB also and burn the video files there (depends on the encoding, though. It's probably MPEG2 or something)

I guess since it supports a network connection you could transfer stuff over the network ... but I can't find anything saying it explicitly supports that.

Whatever the highest quality it supports. I believe it has component output (like PS2 does) so I would go with that. In terms of source input, whatever the highest quality that the source supports (Input quality the PSX supports from best to worst: S-Video > Composite > RF)

Keep in mind it's input and output connectors are different. So, just because the highest quality it supports on input is S-Video, doesn't mean it can't output using Component (which is higher potential quality than any of the other connections listed for the sources)

I'm not sure if it utilizes the PS2 component for output to the TV or just a normal male/male component cable, though. I guess you'll have to wait to see what's physically on it. I imagine getting either where you're at is cake.

Again thank you very much!
My retro store is selling it to me for this cheap because there is nothing that comes with it. They also said that if it doesn't work, I can return it hahaha. So it's a very safe bet.

THis store is known for selling consoles for a very cheap price, and they always work fine

example :

PSX DVR 10$
Neogeo CD with controllers/cables 19$
Saturn with controller/cables 9$
Megadrive 19$
Dreamcast 14$
XBOX 360 20gb 40$ (and it works great!)
Wii 29$

And they have a crazy price on the brand new WII U, instead of 250, it's 249,50..... they printed crazy add saying price down on those and you safe only a few yens... it's redicoulous hhahahah

Anyway, thanks again, I'lll make sure to upload a video of me trying to figure the beast out.

Just out of curiosity, what is it? I ask because here in the states the MPAA has been trying to shut down downloading for years (despite the fact that they've effectively never lost a single dime from it) and if they're gonna try and push the same law through here, I'd like to know what it is in advance.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

what's worth noting with their anti piracy laws is that they're really very aggressive with the enforcement. I frequently read news about people going to jail or receiving fines for uploading One Piece episodes. There's also that one news where a guy was charged after creating his own One Piece figurines and selling them on eBay.
