Crazy $H*T I saw at Wal-Mart today

Two years ago on Christmas Eve we had dire need of Sips (for those w/o kids, sips is kiddie champagnya).

I typically avoid Wal Mart, where possible, but on Christmas Eve it was the only place open. I saw quite a bit of stuff that day, tops among them was a seemingly "relatively" healthy person with 4 limbs. This person had nothing in the cart...but cat food. Loads and loads of catfood. Canned / boxed / bagged, the works. Just cat food. This person was also in a wheelchair. A motorized wheelchair. A wheelchair with BREATH CONTROLS! This person would breathe to the appropriate aisle, get out of the chair, grab cat food, back in the chair, and breathe to the next aisle.

That day I thought about starting a "Crazy sh*t I saw at Wal Mart today" thread, but...I forgot about it.

Last night we needed drop cloths in a hurry and it was the closest place to the place I was painting at. As I was leaving last night, there was a mid 40's female who saw me, looked around the corner and says, "don't worry, it's nobody". As I rounded that corner, there was a mid 40's man, angrily shaking the claw machine, trying to shake loose a 2" plastic pokemon figure. As I was "nobody" he paid me no heed and continued to try to rock the machine.

Today, I am starting the "Crazy Sh*T I saw at Wal-Mart " Thread.

I don't think I've ever been to a Walmart in the state before, I've been to them on road trips across the country but I'm in and out in 3 minutes usually or just not paying attention to people. Living down here in the city there's a Target on every block it seems, what with the corporate headquarters here.

Most of the craziness I see is when I decide to take the bus or hanging out in the seedier bars that I frequent and even then I just go meh and don't pay attention.

So we have K-mart and Target here in Aus, but not Wal-Mart, is it just Wal-Mart that attracts nutters? Why?

I like Wal-Mart. They have video games and iced tea.

I worked at two different Wal-Marts, when I was 21-23 years old.

First one was okay. It was close to my college and most of the employees were college aged kids. We screwed around a lot and generally tried to have fun during our shifts.

The second Wally-World was located in a low-income area and was depressing as hell. Lots of single moms working there and people just barely scraping by. On payday, at least 80% of the employees would immediately use their check to pay for a week's worth of groceries - they were working at Wal-Mart and dumping their money right back into it.

I saw lots of weird customers and even weirder employees. I tend to remember the employee-related stories better than the customer-related ones so here we go...

First Wal-Mart
- The sporting goods guy and shoe girl had a lunch break at the same time. They would go into the sporting goods guy's van and get it on every night. Each round lasted about ten minutes.
- On of the electronics guys decided that he really needed to get into 6th generation gaming. He stole a Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, and GameCube all in the same night.

Second Wal-Mart
- Lawn and Garden guy took a bunch of pictures of himself smoking weed. He brought in the pictures to be developed........ at Wal-Mart. Got fired.
- I used to do shitty things myself because I hated the place. During slow shifts the manager would send me outside to push carts. I'd get this done quickly and then spend the rest of the shift chilling outside in the summer sun. If I had to use the bathroom I'd head to the woods.

I could go on all day, but most of the stories are just depressing.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart anymore.

A rich man might buy a pair of $200 boots, which are made well enough to last him 10 years. A poor man might buy a pair of $50 boots, which he'd have to replace every 2 years. Over the long run, the rich man spent $200 and the poor man spent $250. That's the reason not to shop at WalMart.

Real world example, Levi's can't even sell actual Levi's in Walmart at the price Walmart wants to sell them at. So they created a cheaper "signiture" series that isn't as well made as real 501s. In this case, and many others it's false economy to buy the cheaper good.

And that's ignoring the wider implications of Walmart's influence on the local economy, how they treat their workers, or how their size allows them to bully their suppliers. Add on to all of this that being in a Walmart store is an incredibly depressing experience, and it's a wonder that anyone shops at Walmart at all.

I can understand that. I worked at the local supermarket for 13 years and now I feel weird everytime I go in there.
